Should we be bathing our pups? I'm conscious that Bob has never been bathed. He's 15w now. I'm thinking it's probably one of those things not to put off doing in case it becomes a massive issue when he's older. Get him used to it when he's younger. He was a bit stinky after our muddy damp walk round the woods this morning so could probably do with a clean. Any advice or tips? Lou x
Re: Bathing the puppy No - mine have never had a bath. Their natural oils are stripped by any kind of shampoo. Those oils keep them waterproof, sweet smelling and shiny. I hose them down outside if muddy and use Cowboy Magic for fox poo. Bathing = smelly pooch = more bathing = smellier pooch. Of course, if they have skin troubles you may have no choice if the vets give you a special shampoo. But as a matter of course I would say no baths.
Re: Bathing the puppy I have a nearly three year old and a nearly nine year old and they have never had a bath! A dip in a pond for a swim or a good downpour of rain keeps them sweet ;D

Re: Bathing the puppy I'm sorry Lou I'm not going to help here. We brought Rolo home at 8 weeks, gave him his first bath that week and he's had another one since. He has also been to the groomers once. Mainly for his nails to be trimmed. He seemed to enjoy it and it was nice having cuddles afterwards. Sorry.
Re: Bathing the puppy We don't bath Obi in winter as the oils in their coat help to keep them warm (in theory....although that theory could be wrong!!) but we definitely do in the warmer months if he gets a bit doggie smelling. Plus, he has pollen allergies and benefits from baths using Malaseb shampoo. Hopefully most dogs won't be in that boat though! I really don't think it'd be a problem to bath your puppy very occasionally But I'd do it only if they were dirty or a bit smelly. Otherwise there is no real need to (allergies aside).
Re: Bathing the puppy Lilly has had so many rolls in fox pooh that she is an (almost) willing volunteer stepping in the shower now. I am definitely with you on the coat oils and avoiding baths if not needed. I think a lot of it is shaped by your dog walking venues and pups tendency to like the stinkier things in life *sigh*

Re: Bathing the puppy I bathed Molly the day after I got her because she stank to high heaven having been peed on by her litter mates. I haven't bathed her since. The mud just seems to fall off, i guess it's the oils in her coat that makes her non-stick. She doesn't smell. My husband has a very sensitive nose and would soon tell me is there was a hint of a smell.
