A harness is supposed to be 'kind' to dogs, but it seems it frightens some. I don't like seeing dogs in harnesses, I think it is a bit of fashion so far! I am sure you will all disagree with me :)

We started using harnesses when we had a little terrier with a collapsed trachea, from then on never even thought of using a collar for anything other than holding an identity disc.
Fashion for some possibly but a kinder way to walk a dog IMO, we could break Betty's neck with a collar she is very delicate, and Elsie back walks when unsure and I am convinced would back out of a collar quite easily.

When I said 'fashion' I didn't mean that harnesses could have a fashionable design, more that it seems the thing to do these days. I never used to see a harness, but have seen more lately, but where I live they are not everywhere = yet!

Yes, they are very common these days, whereas 15 years ago very few people used them. I think they have become popular partly because people see them as kinder (I agree with that) and because people think they help to stop pulling (not sure about that one....though they can break a learned association between pulling and a collar).

What a sensible boy Charlie is ;D

You are the first person to say that! Mind, you haven't met him...

Charlie likes a slip lead because it hangs down, loose, around his neck - which suits a dog that finds walking gear constraining. And I'll admit to being proud that he walks nicely in it not because he knows it will hurt him if he pulls - which it won't, as it has a limiter on it to stop it going tight around his neck - but because he's had a billion clicks and a ton of roast chicken for walking nicely.

But then many things could be described like that, we train far more kindly these days than back when I got my first puppy when Barbara Woodhouse was de riguer with her choke chains and punishments. No one batted an eye if a dog was smacked in public. Luckily fashions have changed and we don't do that any more if we care about our dogs.

Albert runs away at the sight of Collar, lead and harness. So he probably hates them all!! Having said that he does give in quite quickly and has no problem with them when out and about. He even lets me put the harness & collar back on him after a swim, sitting quite nicely I have to say.
