OK so it's been quite windy here today and the back door has blown closed a couple of times... Bob has been toileting in the playroom. I would have thought that he'd hold it in if he couldn't get outside, but clearly not. I really hope this won't become a habit now???? Any tips or advice? We will ensure the backdoor is secured open properly now and will reward him handsomely for going outside again.. SO frustrating :(

Is it possible to put a dog door in the back door so that you can leave the door shut? I have a dog door for my two which is very useful it also has a steel door that I can drop down over it to stop burglars coming in if we are out!

Unfortunately not... we have having an extension downstairs in the new year and we'll be having bi-fold doors so there is no option of a dog door. Do know if/when dogs will hold it if they can't get outside? Is that something that will come in time?

It might not be helping if you have always had the door open - we do hear from lots of people who have dogs willing to take themselves off outside if the door is open, but this is not the same as deliberate trips into the garden with a human, and treats and rewards for going out. I'd try closing the door and going back to basics with toilet trips outside, always go with him etc.

The thing with Bob is that when the door IS shut and we are downstairs, he will stand by the door waiting for it to be opened for him. He doesn't bark or make any noises at all to tell us he needs to go.. Do you really think we need to go back to basics? I mean Bob is downstairs most of the time on his own while we are either upstairs either working or running errands etc... We can't be down there all the time to take him out every hour or so... I'm really not sure what to do now... !

Well, yes, I think you have to take him out and reward him until he is completely toilet trained - as he is pooing when faced with a closed door....

Then you still have to let him out as an adult - or go back to leaving the door open once you are sure his toilet training is 100% I suppose. An older dog only needs to go out every 3 or 4 hours, so it won't be forever.

Or you could try the whole bell ringing thing, but you'd have to be there to train that too...

He's still pretty young, I would go back to basics for a bit. We had an accident this morning (our first for a fortnight). I let Inca out as soon as we got up this morning but I stayed in the house, I assumed she had gone to the toilet in the garden but a couple of minutes after I let her back in the house she suddenly had a wee in the kitchen. Took me by surprise as she normally starts whining if she needs to go. Served as a reminder to me that she's still a baby and we need to continue going outside with her and rewarding her.
