Should dogs claws touch the floor?

    Since we walk primarily in farm fields, my dogs' claws don't seem to wear down very efficiently. I trim them every week, taking just a sliver off each time. I do it often so I never have to worry about the quick getting too far down into the nail. I started doing this with both of them when they were quite young, so it's not a big deal for them, though neither likes it much. They get treats and a fuss made after it's all done, though, so all's well in the world! I also like it as another way for them to get used to being handled in ways they'd probably rather not! ;)

    There was a large German Shepard at the last obedience class series we attended that had terribly long claws that looked like they'd never been trimmed or worn down. I didn't say anything to the owner, but did feel sorry for the dog... I'm hoping the dog's vet will say something at some point!
