I took the dogs to Golitha Falls this afternoon but because it was very busy, we went high up on the ridge overlooking the river . Recently Natural England had decided to fence an area off, its an area of rough grassland , the idea being to put a couple of moorland ponies there to keep the grass down . It was a truly daft idea as no one had thought about getting water to them , so having spent a fortune on fencing, the idea was dropped . I walked through the open gate to cross this land , but at the far end , the only way out and back into the woodland was a very tall wooden style . Millie ran through it no problem, but Sam was a little more cautious , before I could stop him he took a run at the high wooden fence which had barbed wire on the very top . My heart was in my mouth , it was too late to stop him as he flew over, missing the barbed wire by a cats whisker , and I thanked goodness for his height and very long legs . Honestly , I know it sounds pathetic but after I clambered over the style , I hugged him close , ok so he was fine but it could have been disastrous . What on earth barbed wire was used for I don't know , hate the stuff, e mail to Natural England tomorrow before someone or someones dear dog gets badly hurt :( :(

Oh Kate...so glad he wasn't injured ....it's such brutal stuff isn't it?
Nothing pathetic about giving him a hug,I bet it gave you a big fright..and whilst he was oblivious it would have made you feel much better x

Barbed wire is the bane of my life! Three years ago it caused me falling off a fence and tearing my cruciate ligament putting me out for the whole shooting season. This year Murffi has come to grief jumping a fence with barbed wire on the top. I absolutely hate the stuff but it is everywhere here. On a normal beating day I have to climb over at least a dozen barbed wire fences. So glad that Sam was not hurt.

Dangerous stuff. So glad Sam is ok. Must've been a huge leap.

And who thought barbed wire fencing would be a good idea for horses/ponies? Worst stuff you could use.

Well jumped Sam !!! Glad he is ok.

I wonder what the point of the barbed wire was in the first place ?
Not to keep people out if there's a style and not necessary for ponies if the wooden fence is built properly. Surely the only thing the barbed wire is likely to do is cause injury.

    Glad Sam is OK too.
Lilly jumped some trying to get to the girls on holiday last year, mis-judged it and caught her back legs. She had scrapes up her back legs and tummy. Thankfully they were superficial, but OH needed to run and lift her off the fence as she was stuck.
    Poor things.
A great fright was had by all. I was terrified she had injured her hips (or worse)
Still gives me the shudders thinking about it. :-\

Damn stuff, come across it every week on the shoots.
Although all my dogs can jump, If I can I will stop them jumping fences when retreiving.
But when they are a 100yds away you just have to hope and pray they are OK.

I have seen some really nasty injuries from barbed wire :(

In some places they are starting to put it on the bottom of fences as well, wire cutters are handy

    Oh I hate barbed wire!

When I was working at the first dogs home someone had been out walking their own dog nearby and came rushing into the reception building with their little spaniel all covered in blood. She (the dog) had sliced her leg badly open on barbed wire and, us being the nearest place around, the owner brought her to us to see if we could help. It was a Saturday so we didn't have our vets on site but we bundled the dog off to the prep room to administer some first aid. And even if I do say so myself I managed to apply a lovely leg bandage :) . The owner couldn't thank us enough as he put the dog back in his car with the phone number for the nearest emergency vet.

The wound was nasty though - like her leg had been skinned with a huge flap of skin :( poor dog must have been in so much pain. Nasty barbed wire!

Very glad to hear no injuries, hateful stuff, few years ago on a walk we found a sheep had somehow become completely stuck in some, tried our best to free her but in the end had to run back down to the farm house and the farmer came up with his gun and shot her. Very upsetting day that was, and he couldn't understand if he had just cut the end of the fencing and not left a big looped bit she would not have got caught in the stuff.

I've seen some of the horrendous things it does to horses, too. The stuff should be outlawed. Glad Sam is OK, it could have been a horrible story!
