Hi all! I am new to this site. I hope you can help me. I have a 1 year old labrador. I could not have wished for a better dog. He is a dream to train. But, since he has turned 1 year he keeps sniffing everybody continually. Not in the normal places but all over the body. I don't smell, I promise!!! He is driving me nuts!! yes, he sniffs when there is food around, he is a labrador!! But, it has got to the stage if you stand up or move he is there sniffing. I do not want to tell him off as he is only doing what comes naturally!! Has anyone got any suggestions or training ideas they can give me? Has you had this problem with your labrador? Your advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Michelle.

No , I havent had this problem myself, but the general advise given for any form of unwanted behaviour is distraction . This can be with a toy or ball , or even a firm NO as you move away . I understand you not wanting to be too hard on your boy , but at the same time, they do have to be taught that some behaviours are just not acceptable so if this habit has become obsessional , you must intervene by firmly but fairly letting him know that he is over stepping the mark .

We did exactly what kate described while he was on his lead and now he walks nicely to heel and doesn't try and mark. Off lead is another story but at the moment I'm picking my battles it's quite hard to stop him peeing when he's not close by! If it's inside a house line might help, you can just remind him you're there and say no at the same time. Welcome and good luck, let us know how you get on
