to give you a bit of a brief i live on a private road 1/3 of a mile long and only have one neighbour who is a couple of hundred yards further along. They have 3 dogs, a Lab, Collie and a Lab puppy. They pass my garden every day to take their dogs a walk down the road (its the ONLY walks they go on :-\) Well both last night and today the Collie and the puppy ran into my garden ignoring all recall attempts. I had to eventually pick the puppy up and deliver it back to its owner. This morning Goldie was having breakfast from her treat ball when they came "visiting" again. The collie dove straight over to her to which Goldie gave a bark "ger off my breakfast", quite rightly so id say then both the collie and the lab came inside my house and the puppy was again ignoring all commands . The owner gained some kind of control again and rallied them down the drive but on their return i was in the house. Now Goldie doesnt leave the garden so i dont close the gate and dont want to have to start but then they came in again. This time Goldie must have spotted them, came inside to tell me the naughty dogs had returned haha. The puppy this time was playing with her treat ball and eating her breakfast to which Goldie was a little peturbed but didnt stop it or act negatively at all and i was pleased she was happy to have friends round. This is the umpteenth time they have visited out of control. Now i dont mind them coming to say hello but get some control so you can call them away instead of having to come into my garden and retrieve your puppy. It Saturday morning and im still in my pj's 8) Every time when called away Goldie comes running to me though ;D ;D

i know Karen. Im waiting for her to have a bad day and turn into a stealing/barking terror haha. I guess i just dont give her much options to fail and the rules have remained consistant from day one...or shes just a very good dog ;D. Dont get me wrong we have moments of deafness and ignoring commands but she really is an easy dog to have around.

Wow,what a good girl, she sounds lovely, but Lisa this taps into one of my fears ' being that owner that cant control their dog' :-\ !!!My Dexter would have charged in and probably stolen the breakfast, and probably the laundry off your line  and i would have been the owner that had to come in and retrieve him..... :-[ .....and remove your knickers from his jaws.......!! he is so good when there aren't distractions at home and our garden ,I can pretty much guarantee his responses and recall ...in the park I am cracking it too when it's early and we are alone ( 6am) but he is deaf to me when there are other more interesting things.I shrivel a bit when I hear episodes like this.....but my optimism remains eternal,we will crack it with like you say consistency and one day soon ( well maybe not soon .....but there you go I am an optimist!) we will be the perfect house guests.......

The difference is you have one dog, and are doing your absolute best to look after him and train him properly. You'll get there, I am sure. Lisa's neighbours have three untrained dogs that aren't exercised properly. And frankly, if you were only taken out for one short walk a day, wouldn't you run off the first opportunity you got??

You have really hit the jackpot with Goldie, Lisa. She sounds like such a brilliant dog. And she has hit the jackpot with you! A perfect match, I'd say :)

Yes Karen is right. These dogs arent youngsters (well apart form the puppy so its excusable) but they have only ever been walked to the end of the road and back and do no training with them whatsoever and i think they are crated or at least in one room the whole day away from people. I guess the puppy will go the same way. The man actually said "youll get a smack" to the puppy. Yes like smacking the puppy for running off is going to teach it  ::) so this gives you an idea of the level of training they are at. Of course out and about in different places with new smells and new people dogs are less likely to be so cooperative as at home but id imagine everyone on this site tries there hardest to train their dogs to be good citizens and will achieve good results in time...thats why were all here afterall, to do the best we can ;)
