    Hi everyone

Indie was 10 weeks old on Wednesday and we have had him 2 weeks tomorrow, biggest learning curve ever.

I was just wondering though whether people from experience think there puppies should be sleeping through the night? We are very lucky and don't have any fuss at bedtime which is usually around 10, we get up to let him out once in the night and we have been increasing this a little every night. He now goes till about 4am before we get up and let him outside. However he never makes a sound about wanting to get up and go out sometimes I feel like we are disturbing him by going down as he has a little moan only a few minutes when its time to go back in for a couple of hours. Should I leave him and see if he goes through the night? My partner and I both work so we are usually up in the morning at around 6.30.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    They are all very different.

Some sleep through from 8 weeks old, some are 15 weeks before they do.

Like kids really ... (Except, with kids it can be more like 7 years!)

    :)

I would leave him to see what happens - but have spare bedding at the ready.

I think I'd be inclined to split the difference and do 5.15am ish for a few days and see how that goes. Are you using a crate? I'm a big believer in avoiding crate accidents at all costs because once it happens I'd worry you'd opened Pandora's box so to speak. I think Amber slept from 11pm til 5.30am just after we'd had her 3 weeks. We cut out the 3am toilet trip after less than 2 weeks and stretched it back gradually til we got to 6am by adding 15-30 mins ish each night. I don't think there's a right or wrong though.

Bella is 12 weeks and is sleeping straight through from 10.30pm until 6.15am ( it doesn't matter what time she goes to bed eg 10.30/11/11.30 she sleeps through then wakes me up at 6.15 am whining to be let out) and has done for some time, she must have a big bladder!!! I do worry like you though if we should let them out as I dont want her to get a bladder infection as that's quite a long time for a pup!! But she wakes me up when she needs to go.... so I'd be inclined to wait until he wakes you up ..but make sure you can hear him?

Yes we are crate training and so far fingers crossed we have not had one accident whilst in his crate. That's my concern as well though as we don't want him to get to the point where he has to go, I'd feel dreadful in the morning.

We started at around 2.30am and are currently at 4 so I may just do a few more nights adding 30 minutes at a time and try him maybe Saturday night to see if he sleeps through. Indie is usually fast asleep by 9 and we have to wake him up at bed time to go out to the toilet :)
    Many thanks

Izzy is let out once in the night, usually around 2ish, then wakes around 6.30. Shes in a crate in our bedroom. During the day she can only hold it about an hour, so i have to he vigilant.
    Pippa, hows the biting going?
Claudia, hows the crate training during the day going?

    Hi Wendy

He is still biting we are doing the hands under arm pits trick and standing up and ignoring but it is hard going still, he jumped up at me from behind this morning and grabbed my work dress :( how to tackle a 10 week old puppy when he is tugging your dress from behind. I've taken to wearing old clothes around the house now.

Toilet training is still difficult I think the problem is that we have a small kitchen and he has been allowed on the carpet, I have shampooed it thoroughly but I think he can still smell it I've sprayed it with all the suggested sprays. I've gone back to taking him out every 30 mins or so though we have no accidents in his crate night or day. Its a slow process.

I haven't been crate training her during the day ..hence why it might be taking a bit longer to toilet train... plus the fact that my kitchen and living room are upstairs with steep steps so she can't let me know she needs to go out, so I keep taking her every 45 mins, not sure a way around that?!? ::) still a few accidents but hopefully we will get there!!!

She has let me put her in her crate a few times when I'm in the shower etc with minimal fuss though hurray!!! But she prefers to be in the kitchen with crate open. If she is left in the living room on the sofa and I nip downstairs or to the shop she's absolutely fine, so definitely not separation anxiety.... More ....I want the run of upstairs ha :) I started recall training today in my mums garden she came a few times very well and as she ran towards me I did 3 pips on the whistle but the last time she looked at me, looked at the bed of soil and chose the soil.... So we left it there for today!!! :-\

    Re: Night time sleeping

My Bella is coming up on 18 weeks this weekend...and we've had urinary issues with her, so try to be "understanding" ::)

We generally put her our for a potty before bed, and are in bed around 10. Sometime between 12 and 2 she wakes up...and has to go potty again. Sometimes just a wee, sometimes a poo too. USUALLY she wakes me up before she hops off the bed...but we do have occasional accidents. :-[ Last night it was 12 ish and I woke up to puppy kisses from the floor....got up, stumbled out and let her go outside....waited for her return...let her in and back to bed we went....only to find the pee puddle at the end of the bed. Oops...blotted it up, and back to bed we went.

A few nights ago (maybe a week) we had a loose poo and pee puddle both just in front of the bedroom door, and wakeup puppy kisses after the fact. So I opted to put a bell on the half door that keeps her in our room at night. I was hoping that she would ring the bell...but it apparently didn't work last night.

My theory is that one of the following scenarios happens....
    • She wakes up urgently and needs to go....so hops off the bed...gets to the door...realizes she's stuck...and can't hold it. or
      • She wakes up, needs to go....tries to wake me...but I'm too asleep for her to wake me up gently....gives up...hops down...gets to the door....does her biz...and then tries the sure fire way to get me up which is sloppy wet face kisses from the side of the bed. ::)

I have no idea how to get through/past this. She doesn't have any other indoor accidents....and while I try and make sure she's had a good potty outside before bed...apparently I'm not catching all the signals. I would think that our whole bedroom is her "den" by now...but apparently not. I need to get out the carpet spray and clean the spots...

I know she has the capacity to go 4-6 hours, and I know that her UTI is resolved, and I need to check her pH level again, but am pretty sure the struvite crystal issue is under control too....I just wish I knew or could identify a pattern with her....I don't mind getting up once in the night to let her out...heck I've usually got to go too....but I wish the "accidents" would stop. <sigh> Puppies are hard work!!!! ::) ::) ::)

I'm new at the whole puppy thing as Indie is only 10 weeks but have you tried having Bella in a crate in your room at night, this may help with the night time accidents on your bed and floor. I agree though puppy's are hard work!

Izzy seems to be going backwards at the moment, last night i was out 3 times with her! During the day its getting better, hourly, until her daddy comes home and then it all goes to pot, and he moans that shes never going to be toilet trained! I think he expects miracles!

you all sound like you are doing a great job. Dont worry Labs are very very fast learners. You will find that very soon you will have hardly any accidents & then none at all. I know it seems a long way off but it WILL happen.

    Re: Night time sleeping

Bella went with me to my mums for the past few days and only had the odd accident ( it illustrates just how my upstairs downstairs house is not ideal!!) my mums boxer was a great role model and demonstrated 'be clean' in the garden several times!! Bella followed suit! She did nearly poo on my mums kitchen floor.... but I caught her fast enough to get her outside!

She also had her first off the lead experience today and was great - ran back to me / the chicken ;) and I pipped the whistle, she did go a fair distance tho alone, pretty confident !!!! Made a fatal error of calling her and blowing whistle when she was sniffing about tho - she didn't come.....so I won't do that again! :-[

    Hi Pippa,
I agree, a crate at night would be the perfect solution...however, my hubby wants her on the bed. ::) She doesn't actually have an accident ON the bed...it's all on the floor.

We were discussing it last night actually....and I "think" that when she has the accidents, it's also on the nights that she has not been ready for bed when we are...and is hard to settle. :-\ It's a thought anyway. I'm going to test the theory by making sure she is worn out and has tired sleepy eyes before we go to bed. This required some play time last night...and then into bed we went. She woke me at midnight to go out, no accidents.

Will be a work in progress I'm sure. But thanks for the suggestion. I've tried and tried and tried ::) to convince my hubby that until she reliably sleeps through the night, she should be in a crate, but he won't hear of it. he's a real softy sometimes... :*
