Blurgh!! Penny has had some awful gas these last few days! I'm pretty sure it's the antibiotics she's taking (synulox) for her foot, as her poo has been a little soft since starting the course too.

We are back at the vets either tomorrow night or Tuesday night and I reckon she will need more. I'm guess 'bad gas' won't cut it as a reason for her to try different ones lol

Had our recheck this evening. The vet said she thinks the wound has improved (I can't see it personally but then I see it everyday and healing is a gradual process I suppose) so she doesn't need anymore antibiotics (yay no more gas!!).

They had also said that they might consider taking her in for sedation to explore the wound for foreign bodies etc, the estimate for that was £500-£700!!! Thankfully she didn't think this would be necessary and has said to carry on with bathing twice a day and wearing the buster collar. She thinks it may take quite a while to heal though because it's right on the edge of her pad. Looks like a few more weeks with the buster collar on :(

    Hope Penny continues to improve.

I can easily believe that cost estimate - if I were given that in London, I'd think it was cheaper than I expected. (Not that I don't think vet's bills aren't astonishingly high...it's just I've got used to them....). :(

I know!! I did think that was a bit steep, unfortunately my vets have got a bit of a reputation for being expensive (they are called Highcroft but people call them Highcost!) however they have one of the best equipped veterinary hospitals locally aside from the veterinary school, and they are huge. They've taken over a lot of smaller practices over the last couple of years, although the branch I am with is their original one. They do all tier own out of hours care which was very important to me as the other local vet uses PDSA, nothing against them but I trust Highcroft; I also know a few of the people that work there as I went to school with them.

I am a bit annoyed that Penny has to wear her buster collar for longer as she's had it on for over two weeks already poor thing :( unfortunately a soft cone wouldn't work as she would still be able to get around it as it's her front foot. It can't be comfy and I can hear her crashing around at night sometimes trying to get comfortable :(

Sadly, we feel that ever since pet insurance became more the norm vets have taken advantage and upped their prices a lot. We've had labs for 22 years and the vet prices have risen way faster than inflation, not having insurance (which itself is not cheap) is not an option for us.
