So.. how do we all clean up our pooches after a muddy walk?! I have a towel in the boot which I use to get the worst off Bob... I'm still picking him up to put him in the car so try and clean his tummy before I do this! But how do you all do it? Any magical tips or suggestions that people can share??? Lou x
Re: Muddy dog..... Well I usually use a towel but pretty ineffectually looking at the state of the floors in my house. We (ok, Sophie...) has taught Lilly how to "shake" though, so that helps a bit for the wet at least. I am getting a new kitchen soon, and one of the essentials is to get some hot water running to the outside tap for "outside shower facilities". Did you read my latest poop rolling post?
Re: Muddy dog..... When he was a pup, he got sponged off with warm water from a bucket. And I clicker trained him to stay on a wooden pallet to be washed, and to roll himself on a towel on a second wooden pallet. I think I had too much time on my hands... These days - shock, horror - he often has to stand still while he gets hosed if I can't be bothered to faff with hot water. Which he doesn't like all that much. But plenty of treats makes him think it's just about ok. Then he rolls himself on his towel, and I have an "on yer back" cue, where he stretches out on his back - like Cassius Clay being massaged after a fight, my OH says - and I dry the underside. Then he hogs the aga or fire for a few hours, and steams dry.... I have to also admit to planning a warm water outside shower, like Jac...although I'm pretending it's for humans coming back from the beach....
Re: Muddy dog..... We get the worst of it off with a towel at the site (actually we try to find some clean water for a swim before getting in the car). Then a hose off with cold water and a towel dry once we get home
Re: Muddy dog.....
Mud?? What's that??
Ha ha Lisa! I'm lucky to have to wonder the same ......now sand.....you wouldn't believe how much desert one Labrador can secrete around his person!!
Re: Muddy dog..... There are some walks where she dips in the river but otherwise I use a towel. I tried to get her to put her paw in a bucket of warm water yesterday but she declined . I think I might get another cat litter tray to do washing her paws as the flat shape might be easier. In the summer I will put a couple of inches of water in her paddling pool (converted under bed plastic storage thing).
Re: Muddy dog..... About 1.5 miles outside Chepstow there's a small picnic area with a stream. If there's no-one around I stop there and let Holly splash around. It removes most of the mud. Failing that she gets a rub down with towels, rags and a bowl of warm water before she's allowed into the house. The remainder is ignored until next time we hoover or shampoo the carpet. It doesn't pay to be too house proud when you own a Lab.
Re: Muddy dog..... I do the same - small towel in the car for cleaning tummies. Then, when we get home I hose them down outside and then use a big towel to dry them. Tatze often sleeps on a chair, so she gets a dry towel or a throw on her chair too. We have LOTS of doggy towels! Our garden is a mud bath usually but at the moment it's full of ice and thick snow When it's a mud bath I can't let them both in the garden or their hoolying brings a ton of mud indoors. We have plans to rectify all that in the spring - I can't wait! (Tatze's chair is too small now, but she still loves it! haha!)
Re: Muddy dog..... I'm really lucky here in Germany as the ground is fairly sandy, so not too muddy. But my goodness, I had forgotten how bad the mud can be in the UK! It was a real problem at my MIL's over the new year, as she has a beautiful house with lovely light-coloured carpets and no hose outside... Luckily our rental cottage had a hose outside the door.

Poor Cassie stood so I could take this, looking really sorry for herself, please don't be fooled she would have happily played in it , if I had let her. This winter has been bad for mud and I had hoped that someone here had found a way to keep a labrador clean, apart from never allowing them to go out, or get them cleaned that doesn't involve cold outside taps, burns, rivers or my favourite the week these photos were taken, the flooded ditches. At the moment we have hard packed snow, or rather fields of ice rinks. At least the dogs are clean. Role on the summer, oops I forgot I live in the wettest, dreacktist part of Scotland.
Re: Muddy dog..... I'm the same, towel dry at the site then when home/work I turn the hose on him which he hates then towel him off with a clean towel & put him in his equafleece if at work. Getting a stock of old towels is essential IMO, you can usually get them from charity shops but I got mine from relatives
Re: Muddy dog..... Just a thought, but could you keep a flask of warm water in your car to wash your pup off before popping her back into your car?
Re: Muddy dog..... milly gets very wet and muddy but i just let her hop up into the crate and by the time i drive home she is usally dry enough to walk indoors and dry off in her bed
Re: Muddy dog..... towel the worst off then bucket of water and a cloth at home.....the spaniel is a whole other ball game, it seems impossible to get him clean so he dries off in the kitchen then has the mud brushed out :
