My young labrador kept retrieving snakes in the summer fortunately so far only grass snakes. She did not harm them just brought them to me. Has anyone else had this problem? The obvious thing is to keep her on a lead but this would spoil our walks for both of us. Any ideas or suggestions woul be very much appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum :)

This is a tricky one. I would be trying to buy a rubber snake or two online, and using it to teach her that when she sees a snake she must not touch it but instead come running to you for a treat. You would need two people for this - one to guard the snake and prevent her from getting it while you click and treat for looking at you instead (gradually building up to moving towards and eventually running to you at the sight of a snake). I would practise a lot in different places.

    Good suggestion from Rachael.

Obviously you need to stop this before the summer - by working hard on your recall and 'leave it' commands. Not only are you breaking the law by picking up grass snakes, which are protected, but you are also running the risk of your dog being harmed if she tries to pick up an adder, which are poisonous and could kill her. :(

Yes I do live in the UK & yes I do know that grass snakes are protected, unfortunately my dog does not know this. However as soon as I realised there was a problem I only took her where I thought no self respective snake would live. Thanks for replies will go the plastic snake route.

Good luck with that one. Sounds challenging. Hope she never tries to bring you a not so nice snake. Mind you I really don't think there are any nice snakes lol. I hate snakes!
