At about 6.30 am, this morning, Otis managed to get hold of a jar of greene and blacks cocoa powder, which is quite strong cocao it wasn't a full jar he must have had a couple of tablespoons, hard to tell, he got a lot all over the carpet, anyway a quick call to the mergency vet, who said to be on the safe side it was best to make him sick and give him charcol. So I took him in a taxi to the hospital, lovely vet, anyway he has been sick, and I will be picking him up at 11. Phew ! I am glad I changed my vet recently to one that has a hospitla that is nearer. Shame I just cancelled the insurance, but the excess wa 90, and the bill is 92, so it dosen't make much difference, my nice dad, said he would pay it. Poor Otis ! He thinks because he is a chocolate dog he can, have chocolate. Lesson learnt, don't leave the cocoa out on the counter, put it away in the cupboard x

Re: Otis at emergency vets Simba is obsessed with chocolate. We had a cocoa powder scare here too...OH and daughter came home to find cocoa powder all over the kitchen and living room. Not sure exactly how long before he had ingested it, our vet said it was likely he hadn't got enough to do him harm as it is so bitter they don't want to eat much. So the size of the dog coupled with the small amount would likely result in hyperactivity (caffeine overdose) but nothing fatal. Hubby spent a very trying 24 hours of hyper dog....when I got home later the next day he had calmed down some, but still...you really can't imagine. Since then he also got into some dark chocolate cooking chocolate squares...same result. He's also eaten a whole box of chocolate biscuits, half a chocolate bar...oh, I can't remember really. I just know that I can't leave any lying around.....and yes, Simba is a chocolate lab..... :

Well I asked the vets advice and she thought it was best to make him sick, it was very concentrated powder, he probably would have been okay, but you never know. Ive decided to start a fund for future vets bills, you never know whats around the corner, I would rather do that than get insurance. I also now have to pay a cleaner to get the chocolate stains out of the carpet ! x

Having had recent concerns with ours - possibly from her eating something - I know how worrying it can be. Mind you, it does make you wonder how dogs ever survived on their own as they really do not make the link between eating bad stuff and the consequences, do they? Lucky they've got us to step in
