Hiya, I'm just wondering if you can tell if a dog has a temp other than the obvious (I won't be sticking anything there) Hollie has been a little strange the last couple of days sleepy, walking around letting little wimpers out ( not limping) she is eating/drinking/pooing normally but her nose feels hot although wet. She doesn't want to play which isn't like her at all.
Re: temperature I would say she needs to see the vet. Could be nothing, but I would better be safe than sorry. I'm not sure of the specific answer to your question, maybe someone else will have an answer for you on that, but if you think she is a bit "off" she probably is.

Re: temperature Is there some reason you don't want to take her temp? It's the most reliable way to tell if a mopey dog is truly ill. Daisy's had two high temps, one at about 12 weeks and the latest at 9 months. In both cases, the temp was high enough (105F) to be serious. She ended up on 10 days of antibiotics both times. You don't want to mess with high temps! A digital thermometer is the easiest because it doesn't need to be inserted as far as an old-fashioned mercury-style thermometer, and it reads out faster. If she is sick, she probably won't object very much to a slow, steady insertion (lube it with lotion or petroleum jelly). Have you ever done it before?
Re: temperature Hold it against the wall - so angle it to the side after you pop it in. You want it to be contacting dog, not poop... Sorry....
Re: temperature I wouldn't bother trying to take her temperature, I would just get her to the vet quickly. A dog that is sleepy, mopey, not wanting to play, with a hot nose and letting out whimpers does not sound like a well dog. Sorry, not wanting to frighten you, but dogs can be suffering quite a lot without showing it, so whimpering is clearly a sign that something is wrong.
Re: temperature I'm with Karen. From my experience a dog can have a temperature and hardly have any symptoms or with a really high temp they will be off food and shivering. If a dog is not behaving normally there is usually something wrong. :-\
