    Hello!

Some of you may have read one of my last posts about my pup's timidity/fear, and how I am having to take it more slow with his socialisation than I thought I would. We're getting there, but earlier I realised that a strong scent really helps snap him out his anxiety/shaking. For food treats for training I am mainly just giving him part of his daily kibble, tiny bits of carrot, rarely a small jot of cheese for something extra special. None of these have helped with his shaking. BUT i used a kong filled with tuna water in the car earlier and BINGO! Totally fine.

I don't want to give him any rich food at this stage as have only just weaned him onto his new kibble, but do you have any ideas for strong smelling kong fillings that are fine for a pup to eat? Or a decent chew bone that is ok for a pup/not a choke hazard?

It's so great when you have a eureka moment! :D

    Thanks x

Sardines , actual tuna fish , peanut butter , all quite strong smelling and good for dogs , you can fill kongs and then freeze them and give to the dog frozen, takes a little more effort to get the filling out :) When I was first training my dogs , I used sausage, cut into very small pieces but again, it is strong in scent so good as treats .

Thanks everyone, nylabones ordered and on way! You mean tinned sardines right? And it's ok to give young pup oily fish/peanut butter when they're this young and only kibble fed? Will def give it a go, small bits to start and see if she's ok. Sardines will definitely smell enough!! Thanks :)

I am using scent, but in a different way.

Molly's bed arrives next week, until now she has happily slept in her crate. I am wearing an old t shirt under my clothes so it absorbs my scent and I'll pop my pale blue t shirt in her smart new bed to help her settle.

Mine have tinned sardines. Their favourite ones are the ones in tomato sauce. They also have fresh sardines and anchovies as training treats on occasion. They make your fingers stink, though!

There's no problem with feeding them these things at any age. They're packed full of goodness. .:p[u;;;; (sorry Shadow got on my keyboard!!!)

Just be aware of the extra calories in these things and adjust the amount of kibble at meal times accordingly.

Edited to say, that :p was put in by Shadow, too, and I didn't realise it was there until I hit submit. He obviously has his tongue out waiting for some sardine!
