[/quote] I get the crocodile version (they seem to be the same amount of stuff as the hedgehog, but in the shop the hedgehogs are about 2 dollars more?? quite odd, but she is a crocodile anyways so it seems fitting) and she quite likes them. Sometimes if she doesn't chew thoroughly enough there are a few little chunks in her poop, so I try to space them out. They last about 45 minutes.
Re: rawhide bones I give Tatze two a day - one after each meal. Gypsy can get a runny tummy if she has them too often, so she gets one every three days or so. For her I get filled bones - take out the yukky fatty stuff they sell in them - then fill with soaked kibble and freeze. She loves them. She doesn't chomp them at all. Kongs are for when I can't supervise and when I'm leaving them alone. But I find rawhide best for teeth so she still gets them, but I limit the number Our vet went on a course about best chews for teeth etc and came back and said no antlers as they break teeth, dentastix are ineffective and often have sugar in them (!), but he said rawhide is the best, so I went with it.

[/quote] Charlie must have been about 4.5 months old...that day, he was chewing the house down. Driving me quite mad. I bundled him into the landrover, drove to pets at home and spent a small fortune on things - which I judged safe - for him to chew. I put him back in the Landrover, and gave him a rice bone, and two hedgehogs. He finished them before I got out of the carpark....

Re: rawhide bones sorry just a quick question back to rice, is rice ok to freeze in a Kong I read that it can contain lots of bacteria which is why you shouldn't eat it the day after. I have done Indy enough rice today for his breakfast and dinner but I was worried so will cook fresh for his tea when I get in. am I being a little over cautious? boiling rice at 6 am this morning before going to work was not fun I must admit haha! I like the idea of filling and freezing them in his kong though as I want a few alternative to rawhide. Indy has his in the shape of a bone though at the minute he is ripping them to pieces within 10 minutes may need to have a rethink of which to buy him, as sometimes most of it ends up in the bin lol

Re: rawhide bones Rawhide chews here but never unsupervised. You hear choking stories which are primarily when one end of the chew is soft and the other hard. The hard bit gets stuck I have to separate the dogs otherwise they both rush their chews so one dog either side of the baby gate so no one worries about having their chew robbed
Re: rawhide bones Rice is safe to freeze - it must be stored below 8 degrees c. If reheating you must heat to at least 74 degrees c. ( I did a food safety course for cafe I ran a few years ago.) I used to freeze a week's supply for my last Lab, who had it every day. The thing to avoid is having it hanging around at room temperature, so if it doesn't get eaten, bin it. I use rawhide chews too.
Re: rawhide bones My girl won't touch rawhide chews. She'll eat the coloured part if it has one but otherwise she's not interested and I'm quite glad because I've never really been a fan of rawhide. No real reason but they've just never sat right with me. She loves Paddywacks, tripe sticks, liver sticks, fish bites, pork rolls and anything smelly! She only gets treats and chews that are natural and have a main ingredient of meat so perhaps the rawhide lack of smell and any real exciting qualities puts her off. She ate half a shoe once and I spent about ten minutes trying to get clumps of rawhide out of her paws and it was disgusting but if your dog likes it then go ahead and let them have it. Enjoy the brief peace that chewing brings!
Re: rawhide bones My Tatze tends to get worrying shards off fresh bones, I used to give them but had to stop. Gypsy isn't allowed them. The bones filled with soaked kibble don't get eaten at all, just mouthed - they work like a Kong but last much longer as the can't be squeezed.
Re: rawhide bones Can i just ask with the chicken and rice how many days did people start to see an improvement. Indy has been on it now for 2 full days and he has only 1 poo and not to be to graphic but there wasn't any sign of things improving. Should we give it a couple more days? Also i heard brown bread can help aswell. Thanks everyone x

Re: rawhide bones Harley was on chicken and rice the first time for 3 days before I seen a slight improvement. Things were back to normal by day 5
