Louis just a few days older than 3 months and he is learning a lot. Could not expect more at his age so the following isnt a complaint, more out of curiosity:

Sit, down, recall, reaction to his name are at different levels but common for all of them is that at high distraction there is no obedience at all.

For example, this morning we met another lab on our walk and I didnt even bother to try to make him come to me (which in a lower distraction situation would do by making myself interesting, without using the recall cue).

I suppose and hope that with practice and patience, the recall witll be solid in hopefully all situations -- but curious to understand why that is?

    Is it because:
-- by practicing over and over, starting in low distraction situations and building it up, over time it will become a natural response for the dog?
-- as he grows up, distractions will be less distractive because they are less interesting, e.g because by the age of 2 he will have met another labrador 100 times
-- he will get more and more connected to me based on positive reenforcement training and just us spending time together
    -- ?

The three reasons you have given are all exactly correct. It is all those things in combination. Also, he will learn that coming back to you is rewarding and worth his while, because he gets a treat (so, the better the treats the more you can compete against the world's distractions).

Sounds like you're doing a great job :)

I think it's very wise that you didn't try to call him to you in a situation where you knew it wasn't going to work!

Sounds like the start of a great partnership. :)
