Pongo has been sick for several days. Chicken and rice didn't work for him (yesterday) - he returned it this morning . Today, however, we've given him a couple of cooked eggs - one for breakfast, one for lunch, both mushed up with large quantities of water - and they seem to have stayed down. So I'd like to stick to the eggs for now. My question - is there any reason I shouldn't keep feeding him eggs for another couple of meals? I know it is not exactly a balanced diet but they must have a reasonable amount of nutrition and they do seem to be staying in him. Can a dog overdose on eggs?
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador? Eggs are a good " binder " so I cant see any harm in keeping up the regime for a day or two . Would he eat scrambled eggs with sloppy rice ?
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador? I don't know if you can give them too much egg but my old vet always told me to give scrambled egg when my dog had an upset stomach. Could you try mixing a bit with some rice to bulk it up rather than just giving him egg a,though I wouldn't go for bulk until you know he's keeping it down. :-\ PS obviously great minds think a like Kate.
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador?
Would he eat scrambled eggs with sloppy rice ?
He'd eat it alright (he is convinced that we are starving him, his appetite is still labrador-ish).... but I'm not sure it would stay inside him, yesterday the rice and chicken came straight back out..
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador? Could have been the chicken , try a tiny bit of rice and see what happens, otherwise just scrambled eggs will do x
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador? Oatmeal is another good bland option....with my Bella - rice goes straight through her, but oatmeal takes it's time and helps with the necessary fiber to help add bulk and binding.
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador? I gave Maisie scrambled egg and rice last time she was poorly and it worked at treat!
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador? Eggs have always worked for us when Mira has had a dodgy tummy. They are low residue as far as poo production goes so will give his bowel a rest! You can start to bulk it up with sloppy white rice, which is also low residue, if he is keeping it down. Hope he is better tomorrow.
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador? Thank you everyone ..... eggs it is! (I hope he appreciates it, the only eggs I have in the house are the lovely free-range ones from my brother-in-law's hens, I was saving them for a special occasion ho hum)
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador? We had a small amount of pasta recommended to us, with the tiniest - just small speck - of marmite mixed in to make it bit more appetising. For such a short term fix I'd go with what seems to suit his tummy
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador? Two eggs and some very very soggy oatmeal tonight - and so far so good. He's also been a bit more bouncy. Now if I could just see a nice healthy poo I'd be a happy woman.... Now there is a sentence that I would never have imagined typing a year ago. :
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador? We've found scrambled eggs to be very good for dogs with dodgy tums (pretty much all egg and no cow's milk). And I think we all become a little obsessed with our dogs', erm, organic produce Strangely, I've found that non-dog people don't find the topic anywhere near as interesting!
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador? Hope Pong is a better today, was it the fox poo snack that's upset him? X

Re: Eggs for a sick labrador?
was it the fox poo snack that's upset him?
Well I'm sure it didn't help! But he was sick a couple of days before, which was why we were feeding him short rations, which was why he thought he was starving, which was why he feasted on the fox-poo... I am going to remember that smell for a while....
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador? Thank you everyone! Pongo is much better in that he hasn't been sick for 36 hours, he has had several eggs, some oatmeal, and (for breakfast) oatmeal, egg and crushed up kibble. All staying down nicely. We're planning to give him his usual kibble tonight, with another egg for a treat. He is still not himself though.... lacking in energy, not nagging us to play. He is happy enough to come walking with us, tail up and trotting along nicely, sniffing everywhere...but not dashing around doing "mad dog" as usual. And he hasn't had a poo since yesterday morning. Because I always fear the worst, I'm worried that this means there is still something wrong with him....but it may well just be that he is short of calories and needs feeding up. He looks perfectly happy, and no tenderness on his tummy or anything like that. I think I'm just being a hypochondriac on his behalf. I'll be happy when I see the first nice firm bit of poo...!!!!
Re: Eggs for a sick labrador? Glad he is on the up. He is bound to be lacking energy as he hasn't eaten much and normal poo production won't likely be resumed until he is back to his regular feeds so try not to worry.
