Louis is approaching 7 weeks with me and is Almost 4 months of age. I love the little guy, he is amazing Working well: - basic stuff like sit down stand is proofed with medium distractions but when playing with other dogs only if I take him for a break - house training has very few accidents - almost stopped biting and biting softly when biting - recall solid when no distractions and did was recalled today with another dog near (not playing) - leash walking - leave it - being home alone. He doesn't cry or destroy his puppy proofed room but we are moving to crate now as he doesn't like but only accept his room Would like help on the below. Can't really get my head around how to train it -- heel walking on command until released (he walks at my heel now but mostly on his own good will) -- stay Both with release cue Thanks
Re: Great progress with louis but pls help me on next steps I can't help much on the walking to heel as I haven't bothered with Juno (8 months), I'm happy for her to walk on a loose lead with me and not specifically at the heel. The Stay command is easy (!!) to introduce, when you have Louis in a sit move a few steps away and tell him to stay, I also use a hand signal (like a policeman's stop signal). Hold him for a few seconds and then return to him with lots of praise and or treats if he hasn't moved. Gradually increase the distance and time but praise him all the way and repeat the stay command if necessary. If he moves before you want just start again from the sit. You can also have Louis in the down position and train the stay and add a recall from stay if you want, also if you can move out of his sight for a few seconds and then reappear. It's always good to be able to mix up the training and what you want him to do. Labradors are so amazing he'll soon understand what you want. Louis sounds a clever pup so have fun training with him.
Re: Great progress with louis but pls help me on next steps I'm teaching stay but not as a stay command just increasing sit so extending the length of time and stepping away etc although it's not a long sit as she's still very young, ok is my release cue. I'm also not teaching heel just yet as she's walking ok next to me on her harness but if she pulls I just stop.

So with stay, you can actually think of it as giving the reward for the release, not the stay. If he doesn't move on your release, encourage him to do so. It's important that you train "release" to mean move, change your position. And don't reward if the release cue isn't followed. This is different for me than my "go free" cue, which means "do as you like". Release means "move, but we are still working". Make sure you proof the release properly against other words and you moving. So (eg) you should be able to say "Rubber, Right, Really"...and the dog doesn't move until you say "Release". For some odd reason, Charlie moves on the word Tangerine. At one point, I was thinking of switching to that as my release cue... :

Re: Great progress with louis but pls help me on next steps I think it's the RE sound and the natural emphasis of that in the word - TangeRIne - it's the same as RElease. To him, anyway. : : : ;D ;D ;D Dogs are rarely as random as humans.
