How do I stop maisie bringing in stones from the garden!? She asks to go out so i let her out thinking she needs the loo and 2 seconds later she comes in with a stone or 2 in her mouth! She always drops them when i offer her a treat but its so annoying! Im guessing its just a phase?

That is exactly what Dexter used to do....he'd sit by the door to go out about 10 times a night and he was still young enough to make you doubt and think he might just need a toilet ..little nuisance!!!He just used to like rolling round on his back clacking them around so I started giving him ices cubes ...that seemed to satisfy the clack to a certain extent ::)
We did reorganize some of the garden, all ornamental pebbles were removed ......it is a phase, the intensity of the desire will go...however very occasionally even now he will regress....he will come back to me with his mouth closed ,perfectly still and if I pretend I don't know what he's done he walks along with it held perfectly still in his mouth, then out spits a stone when I say drop!!!! ::)

I know thats the prob because shes only 14 weeks I just assume she needs the loo, and she is so funny holding them in her mouth with it closed but you can tell there is something there. Silly girly.

What is it with stones?? My Maisie has gotten better but will still filch one occasionally. I hear her crunch and go ask her to spit it out... Her reaction is to stop chewing... Pretend she has nothing... Then if I look or walk away I hear the "crunch!" again and make her spit it out. She never tries to hide eating anything else, just rocks!

Gypsy used to do the same - she just grew out of it :)

Just had to rescue a stone from Chepi. She has me well trained as she knows that I will swap for a treat.

Sam used to be a shocker for this too , we have a large gravel area in the back garden where he spent all his time, sorting them out ;) Now getting on for four years old , he prefers dummies , they grow out of it for sure x

I wouldnt be suprised if thats what maisie does it as i have swapped everyone she brings in for a treat. Have basically trained her to bring me a stone and then she gets a treat!

Yea we have a big gravel bit too kate, and shes always hanging about over there, iv also noticed shes started digging some holes! I have started doing more little training sessions with her during the day to maybe tire her out so she doesnt do it out of boredom and pent up energy.

Obi spaniel had a stone fixation. I'm sure he used to swallow some too so he had to go out on a lead to keep him away from them.no unsupervised garden time for him I'm afraid ::)

Had the same with Juno but she has largely grown out of picking up stones and drops them when told. Never have given treats for dropping the stone, only praised her for the drop. It will get better.

We had the same with Harvey too. We used to C&T for giving us the stone when we asked for it and he did eventually stop doing it (I was always a little concerned though that the C&T'ing might actually encourage him to get more stones in order to get a reward ::) )

Ahahaha. Maisie was tearing up an approved item (approved to chew, not eat) and I thought she was about to swallow a bit. So I say "Drop it!" and she looks at me like, what? Then picks up a piece off the floor and then spits it out, and is like, okay, time for my treat! That was on me since she didn't actually have anything in her mouth to start but it was hilarious.

I also think she is trying to train me by taking one of my shoes when we come inside… she grabs the shoe and trots off with it, but drops it immediately when I say drop it. Then treat! So it's a win win for her… either she gets a shoe, or a treat! So I've started saying "hey!" as an interrupter word which she knows.. and she'll drop it. No treat missy miss!

Sara loves to bring them in and throw them around. Unfortunately, the best stones are about a foot under ground. It's really funny when they fall in their freshly dug holes.

Ours did the same, so we moved to a house in the country with only a patio courtyard ;) Before that, we did make progress in ignoring him when he came in with a stone and then rewarding only when he came in with nothing, he did start learning that humans are boring with stones!
