Iv started doing little training sessions with maisie, she can do sit and down with a release word and iv started doing touch with her too which she got really quick, i loved seeing her really thinking and working out what she had to do. Anyway, i was wondering how often i should introduce new things? Like once a day? And in a 5 min session, how many diff things should I do?
Re: How much to teach 14 week old in one go? I would focus on the commands she has learnt so far to make sure they solid also using them in different locations not just where you normally train her. Also recall should be high on the list of commands to learn nut at 14 weeks I wouldn't try too much, little and often with lots of praise. Best tip is to remember to always finish on a success with a command. Enjoy your puppy as much as possible - they grow so quick!
Re: How much to teach 14 week old in one go? For my next pup, I'll be concentrating on skills in the early days. So frustration management, impluse control, focus on me outside, things like that. I'll also do lots of clicker training, but focusing on what things will be critical in the dog's life if learned well early. So sit, yes, ok, but they can learn that anytime. I'd not miss a second of those early months. And fetch! But just learning to love it, nothing formal.
Re: How much to teach 14 week old in one go? Ok cool, its difficult when Murphy is here too (which is almost always). I have to shut him out of the room and then he whines on the otherside of the door and barks, even when i leave him with a kong! Im going to teach 'look' and 'leave it' next. But how quickly should i introduce them? Will I confuse her if I do too much at once?
Re: How much to teach 14 week old in one go? I think it's important for Murphy to learn to take turns, too. I sometimes train my two together, and have one sat on their bed while the other one is getting trained. To start with, every time I give the trained dog a treat, the other one gets one too, for staying settled. I've just started fading them for the passive dog (well, the last time I had both dogs together!) so that they were getting a treat maybe every other go. It's a valuable lesson to learn to be still and take turns, I think. Kikopup has a video on it.
Re: How much to teach 14 week old in one go? I think puppies have an incredible aptitude for learning, even when very young. I'd introduce new things regularly whilst keeping the sessions short - no more than 5 minutes initially. PS: Don't forget Stand when you teach Sit and Down - I completely forgot about it and now I'm playing catch-up
