I was hoping today, ten days after Willow's spay, that we'd be having the stitches out, but the vet said she's not healed enough yet. Now we have to go back on Friday to see if they're ready. She's getting so stressed every time we go in, it's such a horrible ordeal for her. Once this is over, I'm going to have to make a concerted effort over the coming months to make the vet's office a less scary prospect for her, but with it being so far away, it's not easy to just pop in.

Anyway, Shadow gets a few more days of sofa time, and the friend he's staying with didn't seem too upset to be keeping him. I think she'll be sad to lose him when he leaves! :)

    Ah poor willow :(

Obi isn't a fan of the vet at the moment either some work coming our way too.

Glad Shadow is well looked after until you're ready to have him home. One less worry :)

Oh dear...nevermind, Friday will be here before you know it.

I count myself unbelievably lucky that Charlie got through all the horror of the 1000s of vet visits and his op with no fear of the vet's. He still drags me through the door, jumps on everyone in the waiting room, and counter surfs the length of the receptionist's desk, sending the milk bone jar flying ::) ::) ;D ;D...one advantage of having a (very lovable) block head, hooligan, I think. Memory span of a gnat... ;D ;D ;D

Mind, the vet is at the bottom of the road, and we just popped in almost every day - I do think that helped, so if you can get Willow to just call in for treats, I think it does help. Not easy if it's a drive away, though.

Poor little Willow... It'll be over soon, her stitches will be out, and she'll be fully on the road to recovery.

Chepi had her stitches out on Friday. I had decided to book it with the vet that goes the extra mile in building relationships (and who did the spay) and she was fine. However, previously, on day 3 after her spay, I had to take her to be routinely checked and she really freaked out, the nurse did not help at all. I will be doing lots of popping in just to say hello and for Chepi to be made a fuss of by the receptionists. It'll be nice to pop in and not have anything done!

    What a shame.
I guess it hasn't been the greatest experience. They do pick up on our feelings too, though.
Hope all goes well on Friday :(

That's a shame. Hope she can get them out in Friday - super mega treats required I think!

Re: Not ready for stitches to come out :(

It is weird how some dogs can be so stressed at the vet's and others aren't phased at all. My previous dog was Not Happy at the vets, he would spent the whole visit trying to make himself as small as he could under my chair, which is something he never did anywhere else. My vet ended up doing his regular checkups at home a couple times, just to spare him the stress. It did go better - the smells and whatnot just trigger bad memories, I guess.

However, Simba had the most horrendous episode at the vet that you could possibly imagine after his neuter operation - I didn't at that point realize his aversion to being restrained (we'd only had him two weeks) and when we took him back for his post-op check and I asked the vet to look at his stitches as I was worried about infection....well let's just say it was a truly horrible experience for all involved. :-\ :-\

Anyhow I did a LOT of clicker training on being held and examinations, etc looking at ears, paws, teeth, lifting tail, etc etc etc but was still mighty concerned about how it would all go the next time we went - I was stressed about it, and couldn't imagine how Simba would react after that episode.

He sailed in there straining on the leash to get in and was happy as could be to greet everyone, sniff everything, and sit calmly and happily while the vet did his thing.

Who can figure it out? ::) :D

What's the norm for a Spay these days?

When Molly was done last year the wound was sealed with glue (for want of a better description). She didn't need a Buster Collar because she didn't pay any attention to the operation site. All in all, it was a non event.

I took her back after 48 hours as there was seepage, but the vet checked her over and said that it was part of the normal healing process. He then told me to talk her for a walk. In his words "if you don't that one will be bouncing off the ceiling as well as the walls".

Yup, sometimes I think it just comes down to who they are, we have to accept it, and that's that.

Oh dear I never even considered this was an option. The vet who did Maisie's spay and dental surgery on the same day as Willow's is quite out of the way as well so it would be hugely inconvenient to have to come back.

Maisie is much the same as Charlie at the vets though… pulls to get there and hoolies about once there! I'm a bit concerned she'll feel not happy about getting the stitches out but at least it's not our regular vet.

    Spays can be unfortunate :(

What a shame for her Fiona, but better safe than sorry . I agree in trying to make a Vet visit a positive experience but having had a dog in the past who was scared , I know its sometimes tough . Sam has always adored going to our Vets , loves the attention and the treats he gets from the nurses and Vets alike , Millie seemed to pick up the positive vibes from her big brother so its any bother to take in , trots in with her tennis ball . Hoping all goes well on Friday for Willow x

Think we've been lucky with Juno and visits to the vet. She's always happy to go there and she adores our regular vet Sophie. I've always taken her to the vet on a monthly basis so we could monitor her weight and she gets a treat for sitting still on the scales to vet a good reading. The only time was our trip to have the stitches out after her spay when she a bit reluctant to go in until she saw Sophie, then she was fine and lots of cuddles from me while the stitches were removed. Think that response was due to the (male) vet we saw for a check on her stitches. I know it can be a pain to travel to the vets on a regular basis but it could be worth the extra effort.

She doesn't seem that bothered today. I took her string vest off because the one they made her this time was a bit small and she seemed uncomfortable in it, so I'm just keeping an eye on her and using the Buster collar as necessary. She was going outside and picking up bits of slate that have chipped off the roof in the freeze/thaw, so I brought her back in and will brush it up later when I have two ticks, but gave her her stuffed toy meerkat to occupy her. She's not had this toy in several weeks and she went completely bonkers when she saw him - doing the bum-tuck run around and around the apartment. Bless her! She would calm down and then see him again and go mental again! I think someone has too much pent-up energy. She's now sat in her bed pulling his arms off

Sounds as if she's feeling much better, I could just see her hurtling around with her meerkat toy. Juno uses the coffee table to charge around when she's letting off some energy in the 'bum-tuck', it always amazes me that she manages to get through a tight gap without knocking anything over and turn a tight circle..... Her favourite toy as the Kong Monkey tugger as it squeaks, can be chewed and is good for indoor retrieve games.

Last night, after spending the whole day with me in my office, Bella apparently had some extra energy when we got home....We have a central hallway that runs the length of our house from front to back...so about 40 feet long....and she kept going back and forth at top speed.....and about mid way through, she would swap toys....it was hilarious!!! She started with her camel - but started swapping it for the toilet brush that she claimed... :-[ It's now officially a dog toy and not a cleaning implement....but it was hilarious as she went back and forth continually swapping toys for about 5 minutes...I just stood there laughing at her.... Bless her heart, she slept all night last night! ::) ::)
