Boston went for a run with my husband yesterday and came back smelling like he'd been for a good jolly on the farm! After towelling the mud/muck and water him off I then noticed in the evening I'd missed a patch in his groin and all his fur was stuck together. Before I could get a baby wipe to it, Boston had given himself a good wash and by bedtime it was a bit red I presumed from all the licking. Anyway today its a sore red rash and obviously he won't leave it alone! I am wondering if some aloe vera gel or sudocrem is a good idea but haven't used these before on him, and as its in an area he can lick it might be a pointless exercise, any thoughts? Thank you.
Re: sore red rash My Mum has a red setter and is currently having a bit of a nightmare with a sore spot inside his paw pads on one foot...he's on his 3rd lot of antibiotics and she asked the vet for some aloe gel the other day and bingo...it's dried it up,so it is safe to topically use on a dog ( I don't know about sudocrem?) could be worth a try but if no improvement I'd get him checked out....
Re: sore red rash I used sudocrem on Millie after her spay when she had a rash from being shaved but she was wearing a buster collar at the time and couldn't lick it off . I would bathe it in a mild solution of Hibiscrub or if you don't have any , cooled boiled salt water, drying it off as much as you can, but agree with Angela , if in doubt ask your Vets advice, hope its better soon
Re: sore red rash I think I'd have a quick check with the vet to be sure it's not an infection as Boston came in covered in who knows what. Hope it clears up very soon.
Re: sore red rash As it seems to have come out after his trip to the farm and being covered in god knows what I would be inclined to get it checked out, just to be on the safe side. However it could just be that it's initially gone red and irritated from him licking himself clean, and then gone itchy from the licking making him lick himself again - a vicious cycle! If you can stop him getting at it for a couple of days it might dry up and heal with no problems.
Re: sore red rash Thank you all, he seems to be leaving it alone now, so I will see how it is tomorrow and if it doesn't clear up, I'll give the vet a bell. We live near a lot of farms so he has plenty of opportunity to get nice and wet, dirty and smelly!
