I mentioned detergent. In Australia it means both what you wash your dishes with (which we also call 'washing up liquid') and what you wash your clothes with (which we also call 'laundry detergent'). I meant the stuff one washes dishes with.

No-one has said they are using laundry detergent.

I just use a bitter apple spay liberally. I haven't had much of a chewing problem with Chepi though so have used it twice in 8 months: once on a door frame and once on a bit of carpet. She's not into furniture but would chew cloth happily: towels, clothes, slippers. Those things I just put out of the way. Someone suggested chilli but I worried that this might be bad for dogs.

There is no need to rinse dishes which have been in the dishwasher - the machine does it for you :)

    I wouldn't know.....not had one for FOUR YEARS ::) ::) ::)

    (but I am getting a new kitchen in 3 weeks.....with a dishwasher - that works!!! ;D )

Back on my laptop tonight, I have been able to access my Vicks data.

    Ingredients
    Camphor 5% w/w Menthol 2.75% w/w Eucalyptus oil 1.5% w/w Turpentine oil 5% w/w
    in 50 g, 100 g containers.

    Toxicity
Camphor is highly lipid-soluble and rapidly absorbed by all routes. Accidental ingestion of small amounts of rubs by children is unlikely to cause problems because of the low concentrations but a 19 month old child who ingested 50 mL of Vicks VapoRub had a seizure 1 hour later. Ingestion of 700 mg - 1 g camphor (equivalent to approximately 14-20 g of this rub) has been reported to be fatal for children.
Adults have survived ingestion of 42 g but ingestion of 2 g (equivalent to 40 g of Vicks rub) would be expected to result in serious symptoms.

Eucalyptus oil and turpentine oil are also toxic and can have similar effects to camphor.

I really, really worry about these products in our houses.
I once picked up a bottle of Olbas Oil thinking it was decongestant nose drops and almost used it in my toddlers nose, and I consider myself lucky I noticed. Granted it comes in a glass bottle rather than a more squeezy plastic bottle, but all the same.

I think we don't realise what harm common medicines can cause if not used correctly.

I shall get off my soapbox now.

And look forward to my dishwasher, and relish the fact my dog doesn't chew (*crosses finger behind back*)

Hear! Hear! Just because we can buy them anywhere does not mean they are 'safe'.

FOUR YEARS without a dishwasher? *thud*

Tried chew spray to little effect..my traditional coffee table is in bits ... Will have to look at other options when we move as we will have a brand new dining table and furniture, so if a little smear of Vicks Is what it takes..!

Oh yes, I meant I had misunderstood when I asked about that, as I was looking up laundry detergent rather than dish soap so had the wrong idea about it being quite toxic!

It says Generally mild to moderate if they eat it.... But I can't see it being eaten by Bella- smell would put her off. My house is sparse at minute , keeping everything out of reach, but new house means new furniture so will need to look at all options.

Re fairy liquid - does that actually work??

Just read an article about a vet recommending it to put on a dogs legs to stop them licking it?! Would be really interested in the research evidence around this ... But on second thoughts think I'll avoid it, Google is scary :-[

I only used it once for one thing, but yes, it worked. What I take from this thread is: Plan A is keeping puppy and stuff separated, I think..... :)

Yep doing that now.....but when we move that will be harder as she will be in the kitchen ( with a big dining table and chairs) and the living room with new stuff. Hopefully it won't be a problem as she'll be 7 months and her chewing days will be over ...... Wishful thinking ::)

Amen. Puppies are definitely a case of 'prevention is better than cure' :)

Although it's rather more difficult when said puppy chews doors and walls ;)

Charlie was so bad as a little pup that I lined a small room - with a tiled floor - with a large metal puppy play pen. It was the only way...so radiator caps, skirting boards, door frames were all out of reach. My OH joked that one day, we'd come back to find he'd jumped high enough to chew the ceiling light as that was the only thing left...

    ;D ;D ;D

We don't have radiators or skirting board (yet - our skirting board will be coming soon and has integrated heating pipes, hence why no radiators) so when Willow was a young pup she would chew the bit of the wall that is going to have the skirting over it, because it's not smooth plastered. Also corners of walls. Luckily, I was always around to keep an eye on her and distract her, but when she was too persistent, the Grannick's came out!

The one & only thing I have found that works is Vapour Rub. You house will smell like a doctors surgery but it realy does work.
