Back in January I noticed that Maisie's nose was changing to a pink colour and also some of her pads, but I wasn't concerned too much as she appeared to have "snow nose". However, she didn't. Snow nose appears to be a more brown pink and hers was pink pink! Over the last few weeks the pink colour had started to spread round the side of her nose (looked like she had scraped it on something) and she has lost fur. A trip to the vet today, and she has a bacterial infection that has been affecting her nose, muzzle and pads. Strangely it does not bother her and she hasn't been bothered by it at all. A course of antibiotics, anti inflammatories and anti fungal cream have been prescribed. Poor girl I wish I had gone sooner :-[ Back in a week to see if there is any improvement.

I always feel guilty when one of my fur babies has been suffering unbeknownst to me! :-[ :-[ But at least you got her checke,d and she'll be well on her way to recovery soon! My big Anatolian has a black pigment nose but as a young pup she got sunburned repeatedly (she is an 80% outside dog), and it just kept spreading and getting worse, despite lots of suggestions from the vet, and a variety of topicals we tried. I finally found a product online from a natural dog care company called "snout soother". I bought a tin of it, and it took a bit, but it didn't sting her, and she finally learned to let us put it on, and we've been able to heal her most of the way....but she still has a very tender and sensitive nose...
Re: Pink nose oh dear, well, hopefully it'll soon clear up. If it wasn't bothering her, you weren't to know, really. It doesn't sound like she was in any discomfort.
Re: Pink nose Sorry to hear that Debs. At least you did go to the vet and have the medicine so hopefully all will be well. You have to be so vigilant don't you, I don't remember all this 40 years ago when I last had a labrador (as a kid ;D). Hope it all gets better soon.

Re: Pink nose Also, following my last comment, and probably irrelevant, before I read your post I was thinking of stopping the kong wobbler. Just over the last couple of days I have worried that (as it is not roughed up) it might make Chepi's nose sore. It doesn't sound the same as Maisie's problem but thought I would chuck it into the mix.

I looked up the Snout Soother website and it says that it has an SPF of 9, which is not much (not considered adequate protection for human skin in Australia for eg). Something with an SPF of at least 15, or a waterproof sports sunscreen with SPF 30 might be good. Even something zinc based, like Filtabac cream which is antibacterial and zinc based (zinc provides the sunscreen) and is from horse shops. Anyway, just a thought Most people here just use a quality human sunscreen.

[/quote] We tried lots of things, actually...and most of it hurt so bad because of the alcohol base it in that she literally screamed :-[ :'( I even tried making her a few things (I have my own soap and lotion company of natural products) and I could never find a good combination that would actually soothe and allow her to heal. She is a BIG dog (160+ pounds), and while I wouldn't call her aggressive...she is very protective (as a guardian is supposed to be)...and she was very protective of her own nose. It literally wasn't until we found the snout soother - and literally held her down risking being bitten- and started from the outside and worked our way in...that we found anything we could put on it without pain to her, and that healed. It's been several years now, and we don't use it daily....only when she seems to have a raw spot....but at the worst point for her, she was raw up her muzzle nearly to her eyes....with cracked and peeling skin. Now, with the snout soother, its just her nose proper that is still sometimes aggravated. I'll have to see if I can find a good picture.... But honestly, she knows the snout soother can...and we have to let her smell it...but it's still not "easy" to put it on her nose, but she does let us. It's sad honestly...because I know it hurts her. :-[ :-[ :'( :'( :-[
Re: Pink nose Sounds like it's been a long running effort....but that you're keeping it mostly at bay... Skin issues can be a nightmare... I don't know why some skin treatments have an alcohol base. Painful!!!
Re: Pink nose Ok...pictures.... Crystal as a pup Shown, not only because she was cute as a button - but to show you the black pigmented nose... Crystal as about a 3 year old probably - that's Izzy as a pup - sniff - lost her last fall :'( But you can see this is shortly after we started with the snout soother, you can see the irritation up Crystal's snout.... And now...Crystal is nearly 8 years old - and you know miss Bella.... but you can see that most of the bridge is healed, but the end remains tender and prone to sore spots....
Re: Pink nose Crystal is gorgeous glad her nose doesn't seem to be too much of a problem now. So sorry for poor Maisie. At least she's getting treatment I always feel rubbish when I don't realise Harley is hurting in some way big tummy rubs to Maisie x

I've tried to get a photo, but it's not coming out very well. After a few days of antibiotics the pink seems to be "less pink", but no sign of any hair regrowing at the moment. I've also just noticed that the fur on her front leg looks patchy as well :-\. Back to the vets Friday - that will deserve a thread of it's own, as the last visit was awful. Maisie was so scared and the vet couldn't really examine her. Something must have upset her when we last went in December. I'm going to have to do some serious work on this

[/quote] Thanks Joy. She's not great at being handled, never has been. The vet came over to see us and she shot behind the chairs and hid looking like a poor scared dog. She came round after half a bag of biscuits, but as soon as the vet tried to look at her nose she tried to get away again. Looking forward to Friday :
Re: Pink nose Pleased to report that after a week of medication for loss of fur and pigment, we now have a brown nose with new fuzzy fur growing! Hurrah!
