Hi there just wondering if anyone has ever had this and got any tips on how to best treat.

My now nearly 10 month old black lab,Welly, has red inflammation in his lower eye lids and most mornings or after sleep gunky discharge from his eyes. I've had him checked a couple of times at the vets...the last one said it was a case of puppy conjunctivitis and that it should clear up on its own as his immune system develops.

I was just wondering if anyone else had ever had a lab suffer with this and what if anything you did to address it. He must have had it now for 7 months may be longer. If it continues much longer I'll go back to the vets but wanted to see what others on here thought first.

NB It doesn't appear to cause him any distress, I just think his eyes look sore

I don't mess about with eyes I`m afraid , not since one of my dogs needed emergency surgery six months ago , I get quite paranoid about eyes now so, if it were me, I`d be at the Vets as soon as possible and suggesting a course of antibiotics for him . I do however believe that many puppy infections clear away on their own, just as children seem to catch everything until their immune systems mature, but eyes , I wouldn't leave x

Thanks Kate, I will take him back I think. It was the vet that said in his experience antibiotics didn't work as it tends to come back and usually it clears up by itself but I'd rather I think try the antibiotics if I'm honest
    Thanks again

If his eyes are gunky you could try bathing them with just some cooled boiled water and some cottonwool buy I would have him back at he vets just to have him checked. That's a long time for him to have had the conjunctivitis and for it not to have cleared.

Charlie had this, he had a few rounds of AB eye drops, which made no difference. I think that what was happening was his lower eyelids were a bit too loose and the inner lining of his eye was exposed when it should not have been - so resulting in sore eyes. ABs made no difference.

He did grow out of it, to some extent although I still would like the skin round his eyes to be tighter. If it hadn't got better, I would have investigated the possibility of an operation to tuck his skin up.

I think quite a few people on the forum with Lab puppies have mentioned similar. It was solved by 10 months though, when skulls have about stopped growing.

I'd be grilling your vet about why this is an ongoing problem....

Maisie had eye gunk a lot maybe a month or two ago. The vet said it was probably an allergy and he could give her drops but it would come back once the drops were over. He said if she was constantly itching her eyes with her paws, the gunk was yellow or green and quite thick, to come back and get some drops, etc. He also said I could get some water drips from the pharmacy to useā€¦ I think just like eye drops/lubrication type stuff for her eyes. I didn't do that, and just monitored. She has much less eye gunk now, very infrequently do I need to wipe away sleep and she rarely wipes at her eyes, so it seems to have gone away.

He suggested the following potential causes of allergies or puppy conjunctivitis:
    - cedar - potentially in her commercial pet bed
    - sleeping near an air vent or heating vent could blow particles of dust into her eyes
    - check fabrics, etc, she sleeps on

He also said puppies are often prone to this type of thing because they're sticking their faces everywhere and getting into things.

Thanks all, I'm going to go back and get him rechecked now he's coming up 10 months. I'm also seeing his breeder on weds so will see if she has any thoughts too. If I get any pearls of wisdom will let the forum know in case of use to others

Chepi had this off and on since 8 weeks old. She has had antibiotic drops otherwise I wipe her eyes with cooled boiled water. The vet says it's only conjunctivitus if the whites of the eyes are red. Luckily her eyes (touch wood) rarely produce more than a spot of gunk that actually looks like "sleep".
