Rocky is now 1 year old we have been leaving his crate open at nighttime and he's been so good, but where do we start trusting him in the daytime? Out at work maybe too long he could destroy my whole kitchen by the time I got home, he is a chewer but like I say been really good at bedtime.

Unfortunately you wont know until you try. I left harley uncreated at 6 months and have never had a problem, but every dog is different.

It's great that he has been doing well during the night! :) How long has he been left for out of the crate during the day up to this point? Any time at all? If he has no experience being alone in the house out of the crate then I'd just start with half a minute while you pop outside, then build up from there. Leave him with something nice to eat :) When it comes to trialling longer periods is there any chance you could take a day off work so you don't have to be gone all day? Or is there a dog walker in your area who can walk him at lunch time?

How long has he been spending in the crate at one stretch when you are not there?

The longest he has had in his crate is maximum 3 hours my mom comes and fetches him to take him to hers but I am now thinking when she's on holiday I don't want him in his crate all day that's why I need to start trusting him but it is hard to do isn't it!

Cooper just turned one year old and he had been crated at night and when I left the house during the day for errands and such. Maximum two hours in the crate.
He has been very good at night....no chewing of furniture....but he IS A CHEWER!
When I go to shower I leave him out of the crate and he is fine, but would have to test him other times when I leave the house and he is uncrated. Scary, isn't it? But guess it has to happen sometime. Trial and error maybe? Good luck!

How about getting a lunch time dog walker?

Well big of an update on De crating Rocky......put my car away in the garage which took me 8 minutes and yes I was timing myself came in he was fine, nothing been touched went upstairs and left him down while I cleaned for 15 mins he was fine. Now I have to be a bit more brave and leave the house a little longer scary stuff

    Well done :)

Make sure you mix it up with really short ones too. Don't always make it harder.
