My baby food pouches arrived yesterday, so last night I blitzed some sardines and tuna and filled up a few of them to go in the freezer. One came out with us on our training sessions this morning.

    Best. Jackpot. Ever.

You can squeeze it really slowly so it takes time but they still don't get a lot, but their little faces were ecstatic! I even had the "OMG, this is so good I have to close my eyes to enjoy it more" look from Willow.

Thanks, Julie, for the recommendation. I can't wait to make more smelly concoctions for them :)

What are these food pouches you mention?

    These:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008USFXGU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

They have a ziplock top which you can open up to fill them, then you remove the (oversized, in my opinion) orange screw cap and squeeze the pouch to get the contents out of the tube. They're reusable, apparently, so ten is a lot and means you can make a load of goo up in advance and put them in the freezer for use later.

Let's say, purely hypothetically of course, that your young puppy, for arguments sake let's say a Springer, gets very excited and has very sharp little teeth and is very greedy... is there a chance he'd get carried away and try to eat and thus destroy the bag?

Hahah!! A beautiful hypothetical puppy, you have there ;)

I was a little worried about that, too, but since the only bit that smells of food is the "spout", there didn't seem to be any problem; they concentrated on that bit. I thought they might try to chew it, but they were too busy licking with their happy faces on.

I think, despite the plastic being pretty strong, if you let your pup actually get hold of the bag and run off with it, it would last a matter of milliseconds.

You can squeeze a bit out into your hand, and feed it like a normal treat. The mixture I make is quite firm, firmer than toothpaste. It's still the best way to carry and use sardines. I used to get into a terrible mess using sardines on a walk.

James, you can practice with a tube of Primula cheese. My cocker's favourite. :)

Thanks all. I'll give them a try. Hypothetically of course.

I must admit, I'm not very adventurous with my rewards. Off to google Primula cheese to give that a try also...

For my hypothetical pup of course.

Bag for holding all your dog training rubbish paraphernalia?

Pro fibre for keeping tummies firm?

Meridian natural peanut butter for treats etc (it contains nothing but peanuts)?

A nice bit of kobe beef for extra special training treats?

Looking at Control Unleased: The Puppy Programme. Any good?
I do have both of Pippa's books and just received The Right Start and Passing Grade One from TGDC.

I have the original, not the puppy, version of CU and it has lots of food for thought in it. Someone else may have read the puppy version to let you know what the differences are and if it's worth a read.

I have two puppies, so I'd say yes :)

Be aware, though, it's rather verbose and takes a while to get to the point (like many dog training books). It's focussed more at the agility world than anything, but the concepts are pretty synonymous with things you would use in gundog training.

The only thing about CU is that it claimed to be about both dogs that are nervous or unsure, and dogs that are over excited and applicable to all dogs. Except it often really wasn't about over excited dogs, so I did spend a fair bit of time wondering what was relevant to me, and wishing for more examples (I have a very excitable dog).

I do think though, if anything, some of the techniques worked better for Charlie than she describes. Although, that could be because excitement is just a bit easier to deal with (you seem to be able to be bolder, less worried about making things worse anyway).

From the book, I'd say there is an absolute wealth of experience in agility relevant to gundog training.

It is magical stuff, honestly. There's some cat food put down the other side of a set of railings we sometimes walk past. On the way "out" on our walk, Willow always runs over, sticks her head under and starts scoffing. There is nothing I can do but go and fetch her. But now, having used the paste on recalls and good behaviour for only one day, she came straight back to me as soon as I made a squeaky noise (I didn't want to try my recall just in case). This stuff is liquid gold.
