Hi, Sorry this is a bit yuck. Otis my nine week old pup, vomited up a tapeworm. The vet said he may have a few worms in his tummy, but when I took him, treated his fleas, and gave me a soloution to bathe him.
He is due his first vac on Friday, and when he gets his second vac, he is going to get worm treatment. I wonder if they will delay the vac again because he has tapeworm? and that needs to be treated first ? I know the fleas and tapeworm are linked. Poor Otis, think that's why he had a bit of blood in his poo too.
Now think its quite good he ate a bit of grass, because I think that's what made him sick, and got rid of the horrid tape worm. Maggie

    Poor little man.

Does the vet know about the tapeworm? If not, might be worth giving the vet office a call?

Animals can handle a bit of a worm load - it's when it gets too much that there is a problem. But, personally, I would worm right away if I saw any worm evidence in poops or vomits. I would go with the recommendation of your vet on this one though. :)

Not wanting to cast any stones, but I kinda wonder a little tiny weeny bit about the breeder's practices, if Otis came to you with fleas and worms. He is in good hands now, though :)

Gosh, poor Otis and bet you got a shock.....I don't know Maggie,Otis is younger that Dexter was when we got him so I can't help..... I'm sure getting him wormed thoroughly is the priority though.......me being me,I'd be at the vets today not wanting to delay treatment.....give them a ring and tell them what you've seen.
Shame if his vaccs do need to be held up but you can live with that to make sure he's healthy ,hope he seems ok in himself. X

I don't know much about tapeworm in dogs - have a fair bit of experience of tapeworm in horses. I'd check back in with the vet...it might not be a tapeworm even (not sure, but I think it would be unusual for a dog to vomit up a tapeworm - could it be roundworm?). But I'm sure others have more experience.

I also wonder if it is roundworm, something that is commonly passed on from the mother dog to her puppies through the milk. That's why puppies are routinely wormed with something like Puppy Drontal at a couple of weeks intervals. No doubt your vet will talk it through with you but I would speak to the vet before Friday. When you picked up the puppy from the breeder where you given details of when and how often the puppies had been wormed?

Hi, Sorry, Yes it was a roundworm, I assumed because it was so long it was a tape worm. But it was like thin spaghetti curling around. He has been given drontal, and the vet gave him frontline, so he has been wormed. It was interesting that the grass he ate was a bit medicinal, washing him out a bit. He is fine too, and his diorreah has gone, so he is in much better shape for his Vac on Friday, THANKS, Maggie
