I know, sorry, I'm not looking for a book! The only time I have to read books is commuting to London which I haven't been doing since Monts arrived, or when I go to bed. Problem with reading in bed is... as soon as I lie down, open to the correct page, my eyes are getting heavy and I drop off immediately! I'm rubbish! I've seen a few training DVDs around and I'm wondering if I'd last longer with one of those? Has anyone tried a dvd and/or have any recommendations? Thanks

Re: Non-book (DVD) recommendation I think I might have mentioned it before but David Lisett training DVDs are very good. The series does start with a puppy training DVD.

Re: Non-book (DVD) recommendation
Will she let you have the puppy DVD as an early birthday present?
She's giving me it tonight Good thing I mentioned it to her as it was already in my Amazon basket. I just wasn't sure whether to buy the whole set or just the first two. Thanks for the recommendation. I expect us to be fully trained up to national standard by Monday morning!
Re: Non-book (DVD) recommendation Hope you'll enjoy the DVDs. Another bit of advice I would give is find out what spaniels actually do when they are working. Maybe watch some YouTube clips of spaniels hunting.

Re: Non-book (DVD) recommendation These David Lissett videos are excellent. Really well explained, although makes me a bit sad that Monty isn't that good! His dogs are leaps and bounds ahead of him! Anyway, one question for you heidrun, assuming you've seen/have them: we're only on the first video. Basic retrieve and hunting. When he throws the ball close to him, and the dog is hunting it, he makes sounds with his mouth. They are two different sounds, but he doesn't explain why/what. I've assumed that is just to keep the dog interested in you and to keep him excited on the task?
Re: Non-book (DVD) recommendation It's just a way of engaging with the puppy while it is hunting. It is something a spaniel has to learn, to hunt but to keep one eye on its handler at all times. Making little encouraging noises at the beginning helps with that.
