So according to friends, I bang on about my beautiful pup a lot...in addition to the fact that since I've had her I stopped running and exercising .... (Bad excuse I know but I hate leaving her unless I have too!! ) And during the day I'm at work but she has visits so is never alone for more than 3 hours FYI ;D Anyhow, tonight I've been informed about the joys of running with your dog in groups, competitions etc and am so excited!!! Granted it will be another 6 months until I would run with Bella ( she'll be 12 months then, ok I think?) just wondered if any of you were into Cani cross with your lovely labs and were willing to share your experiences? Apparently the dog wears a harness and the lead is attached to a belt around your waist? ;D

You should definitely try it 12 months would be a good age to start a bit of running with Bella. She will need to build up her fitness for it very slowly, just like a person who has never done any running for exercise before (she will have run off lead but that's not the same as running with you for an extended period). She'll need to build up the toughness of her pads too. You have plenty of time to research all the ins and outs anyway Me, I don't run. I sit on animals as they run (horses) and watch my dog run (Flyball) but I do not personally run.
Re: Cani Cross!!! I hate running. I wish i liked it. It would be great exercise for both me and pooch. But i just can't like it. :-\ But if you are willing to give it a go, i say good for you!

Re: Cani Cross!!! Just seen this, exciting! Me and my two have just started Canicross, did a race last month and it was great fun, got another this weekend. Its a pretty hyped up environment at the start, lots of very very excited dogs!! Im horribly competitive but have decided Canicross must be just about fun....Ive spent two years teaching my two to run by my side and match my pace exactly as I do a lot of running training and take the dogs along, including to my triathlon club, so they needed to learn how to do interval training and stuff and not pull. Cani cross is all about pulling which they didnt do on our first race, and after much thought I've decided not to teach them to pull. So we just run easy with my friend who likes to pootle along borrowing Brods as her running partner . Its still brilliant fun, the folk doing it are lovely, and theres a nice social side too, tea and cakes after the races, and weekly training runs locally. I love it and the dogs seem to really enjoy it too, let us know when you give it a go
Re: Cani Cross!!! Does it matter if the dogs don't pull? What's the thinking behind it? It always looked a bit sled dog like to me but I can't imagine having a dog pulling hard would be much fun for the runner even if they are wearing the right kit.....

It doesnt matter if they dont pull, but it does mean you go faster if they do, and the races are just timed 5ks, most folk are being pulled by their dogs.I'm not so sure I like the feeling, I experimented by getting my friend to run ahead with cuillin, and then sent brods after them attached on a canicross harness to me. He barely went up half a gear and I felt on the verge of being out of control speed wise. I had a GPS on, and even the gentlest of pressure into the harness from him meant a decent increase in my speed while my heart rate stayed the same.So great training for increasing leg turnover! You are supposed to teach them specific, sled doggy, commands, with a Slow Down command being pretty crucial! If Brods saw a deer while strapped to me I think I'd be face down in the mud travelling at high speed in no time....its just as much fun with your dog running next to you.
