This morning Harley was very excitable.....no reason why, so we went for a walk at 11am which is very early for her. On our walk we met a Coker who kept jumping up at me so I turned my back several times. On the last time, Harley decided to jump too and head butted my mouth . The rest of the walk was brilliant. It seemed like she had excess energy she needed to run off. We also managed to do some really good water retrieves Anyway, about an hour ago, just after tea, she kept staring at her tail, gnawing at it and looking uncomfortable. We went into the garden with a ball and she took a few steps then stared at her tail and sat down. She keeps taking a few steps, staring at her back end then sitting down. Currently she is asleep on the sofa next to me which is very early for her.....usually settles down around 9.30/10pm. Any suggestions?
Re: Weird behaviour I assume you've checked her tail for ticks, scratches, stings etc? Is she letting you touch it without reacting?
Re: Weird behaviour Juno was a bit hyper this morning but put it don to the wind. Not sure hat could be causing Harley's strange behaviour with her tail. Could she been bitten or stung by something? Perhaps a burr clinging to her fur and rubbing. If she's settled and sleep I'm sure there's not too much wrong with her
Re: Weird behaviour Is her tail hanging down limply? She might have limber tail if so, especially if she did a lot of swimming in cold water today. Usually the tail is held horizontally for about 3-4 inches then hangs down limply. It can be quite painful for a day or two and they are reluctant to wag but it soon returns to normal.
Re: Weird behaviour We checked her tail and her whole body and can't find anything. She has had limber tail before and now you've said it I can see the same symptoms as before. Will give her some Metacam before bed so hopefully that will help
Re: Weird behaviour I hope Harley has her wagging back to normal today. Scout has had limber tail twice. The first time he was very uncomfortable with it but it improved over a few days, the second time it didn't bother him so much and he'd improved by the next day. The only other thing I wondered if it could be is her anal gland but more likely limber tail as you've recognise the signs.
Re: Weird behaviour Harley seems to be much better today, thank up u for asking. She woke up about 15 minutes ago . Went to bed at 11pm . Think she might of over done the water yesterday. No water today I think
Re: Weird behaviour It is where the base of their tail swells and inflames and needs anti inflammatories and usually painkillers too. Can happen with over exertion or by getting too cold. The other day I forgot to take a towel with me so didn't dry her as quickly as usual . Since she had it before I always carry a towel and dry her rear end as soon as I can after our walk.
Re: Weird behaviour Hi naya, once they've had limber tail they are prone to getting it again. Penny gets it about 3 or 4 times a year now though it's never been as severe as the first time she had it.
Re: Weird behaviour Thanks Lauren She seems to be over this atm, but is generally not herself. My dog walker had a quick check of her today as she said she wasn't running so much this morning and was staying close. She also never ate her breakfast today either! And doesn't really want any chews (smart bone or veg hedgehog) - she had a nibble then buried them! My dog walker said harleys glands are up, but to monitor as could be to do with constant changes in weather .

Re: Weird behaviour Hubby has been home with her all afternoon and she has slept a lot. I was home 1-3pm and she just wanted to lie outside with me on the grass in the shade. She hasn't had a poo for over 24 hours now which is a bit worrying. She has buried and unburied her chews a lot today, but still not really interested in eating them . Just about to do her some tea so will see if she eats. She's drinking fine and weeing fine and isn't lethargic or anything, but if she's still the same tomorrow I will pop her to the vets just to be on the safe side.
