Hi, my 18 month old black lab loves swimming (obviously) but today we went to a different stretch of river than normal and about 30 mins later she began to gnaw furiously at her feet and legs and roll around obviously distressed and itchy. An antihistamine has helped but she still remains a bit agitated. Anyone else had similar experiences?

Sorry I haven't experienced this, hopefully someone who has will be along soon. Is there anything that flows into the river there like a drainage pipe or ditch ? What was on the river bank for example did she have to walk through nettles ?

I thought nettles straight away , one of my dogs suffers terribly from nettles , I usually give her a Piriton and it calms it down quickly .

Charlie had similar a while ago....nettles were suggested then too. Definitely possible although he has walked through nettles since, with no ill effects. He had also been in the river. In bright light, his paws looked like this:

It calmed down over night and was gone the next day. I washed his paws a few times in a dilute solution of hibiscrub, which seemed to help (it was all I had, and it didn't harm, anyway).

I bet it was nettles! They are really potent at this time of year and it was mainly on her pads & legs! Great, thanks for your replies :)
