    Hi
I have a six year old castrated male yellow lab, who for some reason this year as decided to try and mount other dogs, when we are out for a walk. Other than that he is very well behaved.
Any advice please how to stop him ?
    Thank you
    Anne

Scooby (castrated male 8+ yrs old) also mounts SOME dogs. It seems to me like a normal greeting, I just say "Scooby no, get down" - sometimes he does, but it's more of a signal to the other owner that I am not condoning his behavior. Usually just walking on briskly will stop him. He met his match the other day in a Labrador pup who also tried mounting him - not so keen on being mounted himself.

    Re: Mounting other dogs

I'm so happy others have this problem. (Sorry! But it is a relief to have a shared problem!!) My intact 3.5-year-old male mounts some dogs and not on every outing. I've written about it on this forum before, but I thought I would just add it here so that you can see that there are others who also have boys (and I'm sure girls) who mount other dogs. Snowie never mounts another dog in an aggressive way so at least I have that to be thankful for. I think he mounts for various reasons: over excited, wants a reaction, wants his ball back from a dog who won't give it back, and of late I've noticed he will mount a young pup who is wild and jumps on him all the time.

I was on the beach when Snowie got mounted by another dog his size. The other dog wasn't doing it aggressively and was busy humping away while Snowie just kept on sniffing an interesting rock, couldn't care less about the dog on his back. When the owner saw this she was so embarrassed and upset. I told her not to worry (because I could see her dog had no ill intent -- believe you me, if a dog is aggressive to mine, I do not stand for it) and she was very relieved, said many owners get offended (I suspect her dog is also a serial mounter).

My two mount each other but (thankfully) not other dogs.

I would distract him with a tasty treat and move swiftly on :)

I'm one of the owners that gets pretty irate at this behaviour. My dog hates it, and so I hate it. I have very sharp words to say to any owner that lets their dog do this and doesn't intervene, I'm afraid. I think what you risk in allowing this is one day your male dog will try it with the wrong male dog and you'll have an all out fight on your hands (unless your dog backs off immediately, but from my observations, determined - older at least - humpers tend not to and things can escalate rapidly).

Yes, I agree with you -- I always intervene if mine is mounting another dog regardless of whether the other dog cares or doesn't, and if he insists on carrying on, it's on with the leash. In the case that I mentioned, my dog didn't care and so I didn't worry that the owner didn't notice immediately. And she was so mortified and I felt for her because I am the one who is usually grabbing mine by the scruff of his neck and lifting him off.

Riley will mount other dogs occasionally if given a chance but he likes to flirt a bit first....the nose over the back etc so I recognise the signs now and try and intervene before he gives it a go. I would always do something though, never leave it to sort itself out.

My first lab never mounted, but every dog mounted him. It always annoyed me but never escalated to anything (he didn't seem to mind much).

Now I've been greatly humbled as I brought home my adorable 11 wk old Myles and watched him try to hump a 5 year old little girl. Since then he tried it with me once and I reacted with a no and pulled him off. He hasn't done it since. Now he will do it to some stuffed animals and he has to the other lab pup he plays with. Every time I see him do it I put a stop to it and it seems to happen less and less. I never liked it when dogs did it to my first lab and I don't like it when mine is doing it to others. So I do feel a responsibility to discourage it anytime I catch it.

Sam has occasionally been an object of desire, he gets very upset indeed, not growly but just upset and so do I . Some owners seem to find it amusing when their dog mount others , I don't  All power to those who intervene immediately to stop it in its tracks ::)

I also really don't like the humping habit, and get so embarrassed when Benson tries to hump another dog. It is rare, and probably when he is over- excited, or the other dog is winding him up. LIke bbbrown the signs of a potential hump are quite obvious, and it is not too difficult now to prevent this happening. In part due to a lot of training with meet and greet of other dogs, Benson having more control in this area, gives me time to assess/manage the situation, it helps also that generally he is not too far away. Still a work very much in progress I might add! ;D
The main thing I found is not to let Benson (entire adolescent) get too excited, so he is only allowed to play with dogs he knows well. Other dogs it is a very brief " hello goodbye" and we move on quickly.
