Hi Guys Ziva my 9 week old black Labrador has settled in in our garden when you close the gate she could get under it but she would come back into garden when you call her ,so wee me and hubbie decided to get fertiliser bag put piece of wood to weight it down and tie it onto gate with cable ties. Problem I'd say rectified as from yesterday when we went into garden she worked out for herself that if she get's a p or poo then gates opens. When she was jumping up at gate or a little whine I completely ignored it didn't interact anyway with her when all 4 paws on ground I spoke. so she worked it out 2 nd problem now wee have got round first she still trying to get under gate but I had no choice but to go pull her away or she was going to get stuck this am as she tried to get under the wood which would only move small piece but no way would she of got underneath it, then used her brain to try get underneath at sides of bag so my question is what can I do to stop her the firm word NO isn't really working and bit confused as to how to handle situation Sorry hope this all makes sence . Re: Garden gate Marie, can you attach a piece of timber to the bottom of the gate? I would screw the timber onto the gate. That'd make a solid barrier with no gaps.
Re: Garden gate Hi Rachael Unfortunately not as gate/garden is slightly on a slope If wee attached timber/wood you'd have difficulty opening gate if that makes sense. Tha'ts why we thought of bag cause it move either way we have secured sides of bag better and used bricks and some logs either side of gate so will let you no how it goes this afternoon when she wakes up good thinking though
Re: Garden gate Hmmm, what about a piece of wood but attached by a hinge, so it can "open" as it hits the slope?
Re: Garden gate If you can't add a piece of wood to the bottom of the gate, a temporary barrier seems practical as long as Ziva can't get under or round the barrier. Thankfully she'll quickly grow to big to fit under the gate
Re: Garden gate Fiona's idea works on a field gate we have that opens up a slope. A plank of wood not quite as deep as the gap then suspended from the bottom of the gate by string/rope. As the gate opens up the slope the wood brushes along the floor if that makes sense. Rubber car mats or something similar instead of a plastic bag might work better as they'd be heavier than plastic but should still move over the slope.

Although I can hear her wee brain going if there's a way I'll find it ........ Jen What your describing is kinda similar to what we have done but the idea of car mat sounds even better as you say a bit heavier. Time will tell but let you all know how wee get on thank you for helping .
