Re: Settling a new Rescue Dog
Welcome, and what a lovely boy. If he is in the house when he is with you, can he stay in the house when you leave? If outside is not somewhere that he is normally alone, it seems to make sense that he would have a better chance at settling inside, where he is normally when you are around.
I would try leaving him in the house too. Just for a very short time at first
Re: Settling a new Rescue Dog
Welcome, and what a lovely boy. If outside is not somewhere that he is normally alone, it seems to make sense that he would have a better chance at settling inside, where he is normally when you are around.
If he is in the house and I go out the back door he doesn't mind as much. If I go out the front door he howls or starts bouncing up and down. When I am in the house, I leave the back door open so he can come and go. I'm hoping this way he gets more comfortable outside. Right now he is on the deck asleep, but if I get up from my desk (room next to the deck) he will come flying in to see where I am going. We are trying to leave him in the yard alone for short periods when we are home (we do prefer him inside though). He is becoming much better at this, although will periodically come to the back door and let you know that he is outside.
Re: Settling a new Rescue Dog
I still can't believe he was under 48 hours from being put down. I really think his past owner did love him as he has been cared for and had ACL surgery.
Oh ,makes me weep :'( how wonderful he has come to you,the poor boy he must have been totally bewildered. He looks so like my 2.5 year old yellow boy too Dexter is our first dog and I haven't had any of these issues but I can see you've had some great replies from some of the more experienced members.i hope this will help you get him settled and happy,he sounds like he's come to join a wonderful family Best wishes Angela
