How high can a Lab jump? I am dividing my garden in half with a fence, so I can have some plants which Tara cannot eat or dig up. I need to pick a height for the fence, and that is where I am stuck. She can jump on a sofa or bed, and can do pretty high vertical take-offs, when frit by the mop, but that is not the same as running up and hurdling the fence. Any thoughts? She is 5 months old at the moment, but I need to be prepared for when she is older.

I would say if you have a determined lab, they can clear a five foot fence.

Oh dear, now I do have a problem! I was thinking 3 ft 6 in, as I do not want it taking over the garden. Might have to bring it nearer the house, so she does not get a run up!

Shadow, who is small, jumped from a standing start, sideways, onto the kitchen work surface. I'd say they don't need much of a run-up ;)

You can train her not to jump it, that is what I did with mine.

I'd go with Stacia, but also train to leave the plants alone so if she does leap over the plants are safe

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but Tarka can do a 4'6" fence clear with no problems at all. Training is going to be your answer here I think!

We have a gate and wall round our garden. If Pongo really wanted to he could clear it, but the fact that it is there is still useful because it makes him think twice before dashing out after whoever or whatever is passing. So I think a fence is still worthwhile as a physical marker of where Tara knows she must not pass. But then you'll still have to train her / get her to understand that she is NOT to cross that boundary.

Good luck, let us know how you get on!

Riley scaled a 5 foot tree trunk the other day......but never jumps over the 2'6" stair gates that keep him in the kitchen.

Charlie doesn't jump over fences - he clearly could, as he will jump up on things and has no trouble jumping up onto (what seems to me to be) very high cornish walls/hedgerows, but it doesn't occur to him to jump over fences. I have never encouraged him to do so, as I value him staying inside a retrieving lane - although the trainer says it is only a matter of time before it occurs to him to pick the dummy up and clear the fence at the end for a victory lap....
