Hi Guys I think I just need a place to vent/moan. We have had Indy 5 months and so far he has been the vets 3 times and not for routine vaccinations etc. the first time was when he was very little and had a bad tummy- tablets worked a treat, then last month he had an ear infection more tablets and drops luckily it has all cleared up, constantly checking his ears and now this weekend out to the emergency vets after being extremely lethargic and not eating or drinking for the last 3 days, we have had to get water down him with a syringe, back to the vets we go. I'm beginning to feel like maybe we are doing everything wrong and this cant be normal, he should be happy and bouncing around at top speed. Is anyone else having similar bad luck with their pup as I am running out of ideas, I've tried every light food type I can think of to get him to eat, nothing is working. Not to so sound dramatic but I feel like the worse puppy mum in the world!
So sorry you're having a run of ailments with Indy. Pups and young dogs do often seem to get absolutely everything going round.... When we got our dog in the first 6 months we had kennel cough, ringworm, a dog bite (with subsequent infections), chipped teeth, a limp (followed by X-rays) and skin allergies. Things have settled down a lot now. But I feel your pain! You are definitely not alone. And if definitely should improve as he gets older and his immune system provides a better defence. Until then, vent away!
Oh poor Indy, hope he's feeling better, and you're feeling less stressed. No, you're not doing anything wrong, just a series of problems which have been out of your control. It's always stressful when you pup is unwell. I think all the staff at my vets 2 clinics know Juno because of the times we've gone there, all starting from a limp at 5 months old through x-rays, surgery and recovery, although I think we'll always be visiting more regularly than the annual vaccinations. Feel free to vent your frustrations and concerns, it's what we all do at different times.
I know exactly how you feel, the first 6 months we had Murphy we basically lived at the vets and they know me by voice on the phone! Murphy had colitis loads of times, conjunctivitis, ear infections, kennel cough, itchy rashy skin from an allergy, an infected tooth, a pulled muscle. And prob more I cant remember! I was always worried I was taking him to the vets too much and that i was over reacting a lot but they always said i was right to take him in. I think some pups just get ill more than others. Maisie our other pup who weve only had since jan and is 6 months now has been fine tummy wise and everything else but had entropion on her eye and had to have an op for that. Its just luck of the draw, and we just do what is best for our pups
Thanks everyone, fingers crossed he will be better soon. No food or drink for three days isn't good. I'm not used to him being so quiet and sleepy all the time. He has had an ear infection but fingers crossed i'm trying to keep on top of it now. a general question though how do you all stop your pups from eating everything they see? We have quite a lot of trees and hedges in our garden, we have cut them back meshed areas off and tidied up etc. However, he takes things off the bushes and trees. I'm also certain he is poorly due to eating sticks which we are constantly trying to take off him. tia x
Poor little love , my sympathies . I liken pups to young children who seem to be forever catching things , then suddenly their immune system kicks in and things improve
That's really difficult for you, many sympathies. Did the vet give any indication of what's wrong with him? Eating isn't so bad, but not drinking would really worry me, so I can understand where you are coming from.
He said he thought he may have gastro intranitus (sorry about the spelling) he checked his tummy etc and said there was no sign of a blockage thank god! but if he hadn't eaten or drank willingly by today he wanted him to go bk in, we have managed to get some small pieces of chicken down him this afternoon but nothing else, no water so I think its best to go back in and see what they say.
Poor you, I know exactly how you feel. Mabel isn't six months old yet and she's eaten a fruitcake from under a hedge. Resulting in two visits to the vets. Urine infection 5 days on antibiotics. Emergency visit to the vets at 4 in the morning due to vomiting diarrhoea, shaking and not breathing properly. She had 4 injections and was allowed home. Cried all morning slept all afternoon and a check up at the vets with possible X-ray tomorrow if she is sick over night. She has an appointment booked on Wednesday with the orthopaedic vet as she has developed an intermittent limp and funny walk. The vet said take her a little walk as she now doesn't seem to need to go to the toilet and the fresh should get things going. Absolutely no recall what so ever. Truly know how you feel. Today has been a serious low one. I think I'll write my own post as it may make me feel better too. Big hugs to you and Indy. X
Sending you big hugs x Harley was in sac out if the vets until she was over a year old. She had a very sensitive tummy which caused numerous problems for months - eventually found she was wheat intollerant, had gastroenteritis, bit by a dog, conjunctivitis, pyometra.....the list goes on. I always err on the side of caution with her health. It is difficult as they can't tell us how they feel. It does get better x
Gosh, poor Mabel big hugs to her hope she gets better soon. Poor Harley, it's good to know they do start to build immunity soon. Puppies really do pick up anything every time we take Indy on a walk I feel like I pick up half the rubbish and put it in the bins otherwise he will eat it. We got home yesterday and Indy seemed to have perked up a little. We rang the vets and they advise to give him another couple of days as he had at least had a little something to eat however if he still isn't drinking on his own in the next day or so to bring him in. He hasn't been the toilet since Saturday morning though so it may be from lack of food. It is really hard as he was a little chubby before and I can tell he has lost some weight now! He did however want to play belly rubs this morning which he hasn't wanted to do since Friday. Anyone's puppy ever had gastroenteritis any ideas how long it will take for them to want to start eating and drinking again? I might try him on a little walk around the block tonight, fresh air may make him want to eat etc. Thanks everyone x
Poor Indy, but hopefully he is over the worst if he wanted tummy rubs. Not sure what the timescale is for dogs with gastro enteritis but when I had it my doctor said fluid only for 24 hours and then gradual introduction of foods like eggs, chicken, fish. Very plain food and in small portion and gradually increase foods and increase portions over 24 to 48 hours depending upon how things are. Poor Mabel as well - sending hugs to you both that she's better soon. Hate it when our pups are unwell.
