I was in the shower. Simba had been on the prowl just before, my daughter Sarah in charge. When I came back downstairs I hear the tale.... Dog snatching this, that, and the other thing.... Finally he found a pencil sharpener he found under a table. Sarah wants it back really badly, doesn't want him to swallow it due to the blades in the sharpener. Simba knows she REALLY wants it back, he crunches it ....treats ignored, he's racing around, she finally snares his collar as he zooms past and basically tackles him to the ground and he drops it. It's intact, but on inspection she realizes a blade is missing.

I phone my vet friend - what to do??? Visions of cones dancing in my head. We have a long chat. In the rehash of the incident and as I look at the sharpener we decide it's likely that the sharpener could have been broken before he got ahold of it, and even if it wasn't, Kevin (the vet) thought he probably wouldn't have swallowed it. We decide we will keep an eye on him.

Later in the day Kevin calls back, asking a totally unrelated question, nothing to do with the dog. I have the cordless phone and am wandering around, chatting. I look on the ground and what do I see? The blade and the tiny screw...must have flown out of his mouth at that point.

What are the chances I would find it right at that moment?? Yeesh......

All's well that ends well, but I did have some uneasy hours there..... :-\

Crikey - new grey hairs for sure!!!!!

When my Nicolae swallowed toothpicks (...at a party...the toothpicks had previously held some tasty morsel...) the vet said to force feed him cotton wool balls dipped in paraffin. The cotton wool balls were meant to wrap around the toothpicks and the paraffin was mean to ease the passage of the offending items. Nicolae did not need force feeding - being the garbage guts that he was he wolfed down those cotton wool balls like they were prime fillet. And the toothpicks did reappear, lovingly wrapped in cotton wool....

O Simba! What a worry that must have been. At least all is well, which is a big relief.

Wow!! Cotton balls and paraffin! Amazing it worked!!!

I asked e vet about making him vomit, but he said it wasn't a good idea, as it could slice up his esophagus on the way up. I was indeed very grateful to find it OUTSIDE the dog.....

I was in the shower for 15 mins. And you guys wonder why I'm a bit nervous about leaving for holidays for 6 WEEKS?????!!  ???

One more day to departure....hmmm maybe I could wrap the whole DOG in cotton balls and paraffin....? :D

i feel for you lisa..... simba will be fine.....only my son lives with me so the house is relatively calm, ......my daughter, son in law, and grandson have just been for a visit.....jasper was metal, running all over,.....we have had a baby bath in the garden today ,so jasper would keep cool having a little paddle, if we had a paddling pool he would just bite at it, :(........my grandson was filling the bath up for half an hour , why jasper just stuck his feet in, water everywhere, :) with just your 2 sons at home simba will find it a lot calmer environment, with not the attention that he is used to :)......when you get back he will be a model dog and appreciate how good you are to him :).....don't worry about leaving him :)

When we had the toothpick incident our vet said that sharp objects are often passed without a problem whereas the really bad objects are round or chunky things like balls or chunks of corn cob - they are much more likely to form a blockage.

I was amazed that the cotton ball thing worked too....!!!!

But don't worry, it'll all be totally fine!! :)
