At the end of my garden there is a small orchard (not mine, it's behind our fence). Anyway, since all of the leaves etc have grown back, Harley has become really 'barky'. There have been quite a few squirrells and other small animals that I have seen. I have tried to train 'quiet' which has been successful inside the house, but in the garden I can't even get her attention. I have tried distracting her with a game of ball (she is usually ball obsessed!), I have tried getting her to do some training and bring out very high value treats, but all to no avail! Any suggestions? She is 22 months old and this has started in the last 6 - 8 weeks
Is there a mid point you can use? Something between the house and the garden? On lead in the doorway, perhaps. Or on lead with the door open? Get her attention there then step out one step. Something like that?
Most of the time she is fine in the garden, but at least once or twice a day the barking will happen. Some days it will be 4-5 times. When she starts it can take up to 5-10 minutes for her to stop. It's never at a set time do really difficult to manage and look for signs. I'm in the garden with her 90% of the time and it can happen with no sign . We can be in the middle of training or playing or even just sat down on a blanket and she will suddenly jump up, hackles raised and run to the rear of the garden. She runs across the back fence continuously barking.
