Yesterday, my daughter and five year old Silas came to visit to meet Millie , all went great , she, like Sam, was wonderful with him, very sweet and gentle . Paul took them back to Looe early afternoon , our dogs were snoozing in the shade of shrubs , he said it was quite distressing , the numbers of people dragging dogs around the seaside town on leads . Also, people sitting outside pubs with dogs, no shade for them and no water, poor things . These are the same folks who smother their children in barrier creams but dont seem to give a moments thought that their dogs are really suffering in the afternoons heat , feel so sad for them
Re: Poor dogs Yes. Black Labs in particular suffer in the heat. Lady is absolutely no good on hot days. We had my cousins staying for a few days last week and took them for a walk that included part of the South Downs way. Not very hot but enough to be hard work for Lady. Plenty of shady parts of the walk under trees and with a café with shade for a mid walk rest. But the last mile or so was in the open and she was struggling. We took her to Climping to cool off in the sea and she loved that. Then we went for a drink at a pub and sat in the shade on the decking patio. It bounced when Lady just let herself drop on the deck! I think she just lifted 2 legs down one side and went over! She perked up when the snacks came round though! We always avoid walking her in the heat of the day. The South Downs way walk was a bit of an exception where it was fairly hot but the forecast had said cloudy and cool before we set off. :
Re: Poor dogs It beggars belief doesn't it? I bet Silas was delighted with Millie and I bet Lady was delighted with the Ready Salted ;D
Re: Poor dogs Yes, if the human are hot, your dog is hotter! Poor hot doggies I'm sure that the pub snacks were very well received
Re: Poor dogs I didn't realise how Charlie would suffer in the heat until I took him to the park on a really sunny day :-[. Luckily, I was just thinking "why is he so listless" when I met another Choc lab owner who said he looked a bit hot and uncomfortable, and explained how they suffer in the sun. We'd only been out 10 mins, but he was a really young pup then - of course, we went straight home to be in the shade. Now I know better, it's boiling her today so we've had a really early shady woodland walk (stopping for sips of water twice), and then a play in the garden with the irrigation system on to get nice and damp, and a lie down on the cold tiles in the kitchen (both Dexter the desert dog tips) - I went to look for a ridge paddling pool yesterday (Kate tip), no luck yet though. He is now stretched out on the wooden floor in the study, smelling a bit damp, but nice and cool.
Re: Poor dogs i took jasper for a short lead walk this morning , no free run ....i carry a doggie portable water dispenser .......its brilliant just attach it to my lead, i only a couple of pounds
Re: Poor dogs Top tip! I'll try to find one online. I've been lugging a bottle and small bowl around.
Re: Poor dogs Same here, vital part of the kit for us.......can't say how many times we have been sharing too....lots of owners walking along sweating ,with their dogs panting like trains and not a sip of water between them....ours came from the pet shop x
Re: Poor dogs i agree angela .....any one will fill it up for you .....why do they take them out without a drink its beyond me
Re: Poor dogs We have one , vital in warm days Our favourite beck, dog friendly all year, has a smashing cafe on he beach with indoor seating and also thatched huts outside, water bowls all over the place , the owber has spent a lot of money but dog owners are paying it back ten fold
Re: Poor dogs It was the end of a hot walk and I spied a plastic container left under a tap by a thoughtful person. I filled it with lovely cool water, offered it to the young Lab "are you trying to poison me" his body language said as he avoided it like mad, 7 year old Lab turned his nose up and only 13 year old GSP said she "might just take a sip" Stacia.
