I thought I'd post about this as some of you, like me, may not realise such a thing as a mobile vet exists but, like me, may find it very useful.

Although our last trip to the vet was an improvement there was still no way the vet could examine my dogs which is obviously a problem. It crossed my mind wouldn't a mobile vet make life a lot easier. I don't mean a home visit I mean a vet geared up specifically to treat your dog at home. I googled it not believing such a thing existed. Turns out it does and there's one who lives about 20 minutes from me.

Scott and Scout met their new vet last week. She came to make friends with them before she has to prod and poke them and spent the best part of an hour throwing a ball for them in the garden. Probably the strangest veterinary appointment either of us has had.☺️ She started her mobile veterinary practice as she believes a better diagnosis and a more realistic physical and behavioural assessment can be made if a dog is relaxed and the best place for that is at home. She wants to treat animals as she would treat her own which isn't practical in a normal veterinary practice situation which has time constraints. Some mobile vets have a van kitted out as an operating theatre. My mobile vet hasn't one of those yet so for operations uses her local vets where she does the operations and then stays with the animal until ready for coming home. Importantly for me she has a lot of experience with nervous and aggressive dogs. She is a trustee of The Northern Greyhound Rescue, her friend set it up and she does a lot of work with other animal shelters including the RSPCA. She has 10 greyhounds herself most of them foster dogs. She had seven in her car when she came a bit like James Herriot . She obviously loves dogs. It was the easiest veterinary visit I've ever had. I'm not sure exactly how S&S will react when it comes down to an examination but by the end of their first appointment Scott had his nose buried in her pocket. A strange situation as it's obviously not a behaviour I would want to encourage but this was a vets pocket !!! How often does that happen ? Never in my world. Oh and she only charges £4 more than my 'normal vet'.

I can see some disadvantages to this method of veterinary practice but I think in Scott and Scout's case the advantages far out weigh the disadvantages. Less stress for all concerned.

Thanks for sharing this Jen , it must be very helpful and informative to other owners of dogs who are nervous of Vet visits , I can imagine the boys must have felt so much more at ease in their own environment :)

I wouldn't never have thought such a thing existed, so thanks for sharing the information. Let's hope it continues to go well with S&S :)

Sounds like a great idea, and how lucky for you to have one local. And a bonus that she is lovely and Scott and Scout have taken to her.

Me too. ☺️It's certainly a relief to have found her. Now I only need to worry about whatever might be wrong with them not worry in advance that if something goes wrong with them we have to go through the ordeal of the vet. Aren't animals supposed to reduce stress ?

Oh boy, I had to laugh when I read your comment!! I have more gray hairs since Snowie arrived three years ago!! And everyone says: you must be so relaxed having a dog. Hah! Our neighbour up the road has a pavement special that can get by on the smell of an oily rag. Do you think that Labs are getting more and more overbred bringing with it all the problems associated with inbreeding?

I know pedigree dogs are more prone to genetic problems but in my experience they seem more prone to everything which I don't understand. In my family there are three rescue dogs of unknown mix. They are about eight years old. I can count on my fingers the amount of times they have,so far fingers crossed, been to the vet between them other than for vaccinations. I've lost count how many times Scott and Scout have been to the vet and they are only four.
