I was watching Send in the Dogs Australia tonight and saw that the dogs were wearing boots because of the hot tarmac. So I looked them up on Amazon and came across Mush Secret Protective Wax for paws. Has anyone used it? Has anyone used anything to protect the paws?
Our old doggie wore Ruffwear boots to give his back feet grip and to stop his toes from dragging on the ground. They worked very well. We've also used them to stop Obi chewing an itchy foot. So they have a few uses
I have boots for Charlie - I bought them because I wanted him to wear them at a certain beach where I worry about fish hooks lost by people fishing. He hates them. Doesn't much like wearing stuff....anyway.... I think Heidrun mentioned mushers secret paw wax, and Fiona might have tried it too. I was tempted to get some for a walk which I do (when Charlie is not on rest ) with very rough, gravel tracks. He got sore paws the last time we went. Cleared up after a day, but still.... Be interested to know about it if you try it.
The only wax I've ever used Jane was one that was supposed to,prevent slipping on tiles/ marble floors...it didn't it was a waste of money. We obviously have pavements and Tarmac that heat up to an alarming temperature but I've never gone down the boot route.I can make sure Dexter doesn't walk on hot surfaces with careful time management of toilet visits.I look at his paws all the time to check them ,to be honest for a dog that walks on soft surfaces most of the time, they feel quite 'leathery' although they are really smooth.I' m not sure what the wax that you've seen does but for us I think the texture of Dexter's paws seems to cope with his environment so I don't want to mess about with anything ....until I need something if you know what I mean x
Hi Jane. I've used it in the winter time because my two don't like the salt on their paws; especially Willow, who gets quite distressed by it. It seems to work quite well for that. I had read that it's supposed to help with hot surfaces, too, but I'm not really sure how that works - the paws will still be in contact with the same hot surface, after all. It makes your hands feel lovely when you've rubbed it into their paws, though
Thanks. Chepi's paws aren't smooth; they are cracked and dry but she never complains about them. When I don't have a broken ankle I mostly drive her to fields and parks and dirt trails for her runs but with my ankle injury I have to hobble down footpaths which can get hot. My Australian upbringing kicks in as I constantly look for shade - Chepi knows "go and rest in the shade" and will do it. Maybe I will ask the vet about her paws when we go for her boosters - I think I will buy the stuff to try but I just don't want to upset the natural state of her paws if they are as they are meant to be.
