Steve Kimberley recommended Training the Retriever by J A Kersley to me and I've tracked down a copy. It's quite old(came out in the 70s so about the same age as me!) so you need to take the bits you want and leave the bits you don't (most of the Ch. On crime and punishment and the correction of faults ) but it's written by an amateur trainer with a good dose of humour and I'm finding it very interesting
