Hello everyone Joseph has very recently had fit, about 15 mins ago. The fit lasted at a rough estimate 15-20 seconds, he was incontinent of urine, took about 2-4 mins to wake up, he then jumped on the bed and had approx 5 mins dozing time, before becoming fully alert. Then...he scampered out to the garden, produced a huge poo, payed with Bailey and then and laid back on the bed with me! I have phoned the on-call vet service, and the nurse advised me hat Joseph could have another fit, to keep him quiet in a cool dark room, and to stay with him. Joseph is a bi excitable at the moment and very interested in the smell of food! I'm going to take Joseph to my vet in the morning or a once over....is there anything else I should be doing? The nurse also advised that fits are not uncommon in labs, and this could be a one off. Any thoughts and information would be very much appreciated. The one thing I have noticed is that Joseph appears to have an increased sensitivity to smells. As he woke up, he started sniffing my handbag, the air as dinner was cooking, and then was desperate to eat when the food came out of the oven. Now, I know in humans fits are energy intensive, and therefore cause a deficit in the energy sources. I assume the same happens in dogs? Just wondered I was making correct links here, or going off piste with my thinking. Man thanks fo your help.....I ant tell you how relieved I was to have you all to turn to!
Re: Joseph has just had a fit...advice please I don't know an awful lot about fits - but I do remember a black lab cross my parents had, had a fit once. Just the once. Hopefully you will be lucky too. But the visit to the vet is a must.
Re: Joseph has just had a fit...advice please How worrying and stressful. So sorry I don't have any experience to offer. But wishing you and your boy well, getting him to a vet would seem to be the thing. Did the nurse think in the morning was soon enough?
Re: Joseph has just had a fit...advice please I have been unfortunate enough to have experience of seizures so maybe I can put your mind at rest a little ? How old is Joseph ? Yes, he might have another but keeping him calm and maybe in a darkened room will help , comfort and be there for him without being too fussy, try to act normally as possible . Sometimes , dogs can just have one or two and then no more . In my case, my dog continued to have them and was treated very successfully with phenobarbital, Vets usual first port of call and very effective indeed in my case . Please try not to worry too much , there is help these days and dogs can live full happy lives , as mine did .
Re: Joseph has just had a fit...advice please Thank you Karen and Julie The nurse said morning was fine, but to ring during the night if he had another. Looking at him now, he is happily walking round, fairly steady on his feet, and settled down for a sleep by my bed, but only for a short while. Joseph has also had a small amount of my food and has had a drink. If I were assessing a patient, I would say they are clinically stable if presenting the same way as Joseph (not that my patients have shiny black coats and a wet nose!). However, since I'm not a doggie nurse, so I'm just using my intuition here. This has come out of the blue, he was fast asleep and then I heard him making unusual distressed noises, then bang he had a fit. I do hope this is going to be a one off...bloody hell, I was frightened! I'm keeping him in my sight at all times, as gut instinct is telling me to. While I'm writing to you, he is up and down, wandering around and a bit restless. Thank you again, your support is priceless
Re: Joseph has just had a fit...advice please Hello Kate Thank you for your advice etc...this has definitely helped. Joseph is 7 years old but I don't know his past medical history as he is one of my rescue boys. He is just very restless at the moment, is this what you experienced with your dog. We are off to the vets first thing in the morning, and luckily I have a truly wonderful vet. Any thanks, Kate ... You have been a big help too
