My 16 week Ella is sick . Sprayed the hallway with poo this morning (apologies for the graphic image), we gave her a light breakfast which she threw up, ate again and threw up again and then sprayed the lounge with poo (thank goodness for wooden floors). My husband took her to the vet because I had to work and they thankfully didn't seem too concerned as everything else seemed ok. We've got a special food, probiotic and electrolytes for her water. She hasn't exploded from either end since and, whilst she's slept most of the day (it's 9pm here) she's started to get a little playful in the last hour. Fingers crossed she's over the worst of it because it's so horrible seeing her so quiet. I've never been so pleased to see her jump on the coffee table, steal a coaster and run off to her bed! The vet suggested that she could have either eaten something she shouldn't have or possibly picked up a bug from another dog. She's fully vaccinated and we haven't changed her diet. We're new to pet ownership so everything like this scares me a bit. Has anyone else experienced an illness like this? Emily x
Aw, poor lass! In dogs a short bout of squirty poo isn't a big deal. If it goes on and on they can become dehydrated, just as we can, but if it's pretty much stopped now and she's been drinking then I wouldn't worry about that. Sounds like your vet has it all covered Get well soon, Ella!
Be sure she's drinking and give her bland food for a day or so (scrambled eggs, no milk or chicken and rice or tinned Chappie) she should be fine - they soon go down but they soon perk up. Be careful to give the correct dose of electrolyte stuff as they contain salts and too much would be bad for her. Go back to the vet if you have any doubts at all, dehydration is serous in little ones. Get well soon Ella xx
It IS worrying when they become ill but your vet is your best friend at the moment and if she's still not well don't hesitate to call the vet for phone advice. I suppose the vet has given instructions about how to feed her as she recovers? Little to start with etc? Hope you all get a good night's sleep
Yep, the vet has given us this canned wet food that's bland, low fat and good for stomach issues (I think it has a proper name) and Ella was only allowed a table spoon of that this evening mixed with a sachet of the probiotic. She's then given us a plan increasing the amount over the next couple of days. She gave us strict instructions with the electrolytes as well so we've got a bottle mixed up in the fridge. We've also been told to take her back first thing tomorrow if she has a bad night but fingers it's only me that has a bad night because I'll be up checking on her every hour! Thanks for the well wishes. I never realised that getting a puppy would cause my evening conversations with the husband to change so much. I feel like all we do is talk about Ella's bodily functions haha!
Oh poor Ella. hoping she is soon feeling much better, but it sounds as if she is on the mend if she's feeling playful.
So sorry about Ella. My Cooper (17 months) had a bout a month ago for the first time in his short life, so I was soooo worried....vet put him on an antibiotic powder and chicken and rice and he was fine within a couple of days. But you are right about the SPRAYING!! OMG......really bad....and takes forever to clean it all up, doesn't it??? Not something you want to wake up to first thing in the morning! This is my first dog so I am a worrier but all my friends have told me this happens when they eat something they sho uldn't when they are outdoors.....Don't know about yours but mine chew stones, grass, dirt, branches, and who knows what else....plus he probably swallows some of these, too! Good luck. Sure she will be fine.
Sorry she's been upset but sounds like she's rallying now...hope your don't have too bad a night...I feel like all I talked about was dog poo for the first 3 months we had Dexter so you aren't alone in your topic of conversation x Best Wishes Angela x
Don't even talk to me about the mess of poo and spew! Add in my pregnancy, heightened sense of smell and morning sickness and you have a recipe for disaster! I don't know what planet I was in when I thought getting a puppy and having a baby at the same time was a good idea!
Oops, I managed to delete the first part of my last post. Ella made it through the night (although I'm a little tired), has had plenty to drink and seems a little bouncy this morning so hopefully she'll continue to improve ☺☺
Glad she;s getting a bit better hopefully she will be fine again soon. in our house we call it the brown tide
