I have to admit to being a bit confused over tick/worm medication for our holiday in France. We have everthing sorted, then were given a fact sheet, no explanation and just told to read it. Well it just really recommends scalibor collar for most things..ie ticks...and Frontline spray for everything else? So I would be really grateful if any of our French friends could share there flea/tick regimes? I think Brittany is classed as "Northern Europe" where prevalence of sandflys is very low...

We have similar requirements to France, especially with all our travelling to France and Spain. At the moment, I'm using Advantix, but I need to apply it more regularly than stated because it wears off through swimming. For a holiday, I'd probably just go with a Scalibor collar for your two - I'm not happy to use them on mine at the moment because they do grab each other's collars when they're playing and I wouldn't want them to get a mouthful of that. Be aware that Scalibor collars do need taking off if the dogs go into salt water which makes them decay - and it's advised to remove them in any water, so they don't cause any pollution. I wouldn't use Frontline additionally - Scalibor collars are anti-tick, mosquito and sandfly. Having said that, my sister's cocker was wearing a Scalibor collar on our holiday and he did get bitten by something several times - my two didn't get bitten at all. That might just be something to do with the different structure of the coats, though.

Sorry, I'm not being very helpful, am I?!

Worming is simple - just use your regular wormer but be aware that they need a tablet administered by a vet within five days of travel back to the UK. Mine uses Drontal, but the vet my sister visited the other day gave her a two-part medication, one which was given there and the other later on. I have no more details than that, sorry.

Thanks Snowbunny! The problem is twofold..one scalibor is recommended to fit the collars2 to 3 weeks before we go away, it is also toxic to cats, and often Casper sleeps curled up with our very old and frail Siamese. I have also heard that some dogs do react.
I want just to use Nexgard, and something to cover heartworm. The vet fact sheet was very limited and only given to us yesterday, and we leave on the 29th...

Hi Kate, I'm in Normandy and holidayed at your destination late June/early July. I use Advantix for Juno at the recommendation of my French vet and it is fine for use in Southern Brittany. I applied the Advantix just before we went away and did not worry too much about degradation by swimming as we only away for a week but took extra with us to be on the safe side.

As for worming I use Milbemax, again on vet recommendation, but I would refrain from using any just before you come away as you only need the treatment before you return to UK. Worming has to be not less than 24 hours and not more than 5 days. Paul and Elaine are happy to arrange a vet appointment for the administering of the wormer but \I would leave it to what the French vet recommends as they have to sign, date and time the Pet Passport - it's important to check that date and time is entered.

I've had no problems with using Advantix administered at 4 weekly intervals all summer and Juno swims a couple of times a week usually.

Thank you Rosemary! After a bit more research, I also came up with the combination of Advantix and Milbemax so very reassuring to read that's what your vet recommended, very useful :)

Forget to mention that you will need to be careful with Caspar and your Siamese as Advantix is toxic to cats. There's no reason though why you can't use it right at the last minute or even once you're there as you don't need the tick/flea treatment for entry/re-entry only the wormer. Quite jealous of you getting ready for your holiday :(, but I've been looking to get away for a week in September but it seems that most of the places I've been interested in are fully booked through out the month. Still fingers crossed we may be off to Aquitaine :D:D

If you're not sure of anything for your journey or bits for the dogs just shout and I'll try to help with information :D
