    Hey all,

Had to take Penny to the vet this morning, she has kennel cough...., despite having had the vaccination. Apparently it does not make them completely immune (this I didn't know). She has been prescribed 5 days of antibiotics, we gave her the first dose this morning which she happily gobbled up, little food hoover that she is. But shortly afterwards she had very runny poo. Has anyone had experience with antibiotics before? Is this a normal side effect?

I have just given her second and final dose for the day so will monitor if I happens again and then can definitely attribute it to the pills. Alternatively I thought maybe it could be a result of the heat, maybe a little dehydrated or something (although she seems to be drinking plenty).

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

Gosh I didn't know that,I thought the immunization protected them...sorry she's picked it up.

The only experience I have of antibiotics was whenDexter had giardia and was prescribed metrizonadal ( from memory that was the drug)a symptom of the giardia was soft runny poo any way but quite a few people told me that antibiotics would make him runny.it would be hard for me to say if the drugs made it worse because that symptom was already there as part of the condition......

As long as she is eating and drinking plenty and toileting she can't be far wrong, but if you have any doubts,my own advice to myself is call the vet.hope she gets better soon

Antibiotics in humans can lead to upset tummies, so not surprising it can happen with puppies too...

Hope little Penny is better soon.

Sam had to have AB`s once as a pup after eating something disgusting and getting a nasty infection , he had very runny poos for a few days too , I think its par for the course .
The KC vac is a bit like us having the `flu jab , not 100% because of the different strains, but I was told that a dog who has had the vac will have a more minor case of it , hoping your little one is better soon :)

Thanks all. Thought it was probably a normal response but wanted to make sure just in case. She's not too bad really, just gets some gunk in the corners of her eyes, nose runs a bit and coughs like she is trying clear her throat, sometimes dry heaves too, but mostly after she has had a drink or been active. Vet said the antibiotics should just nip it in the bud now before it develops and gets worse. Apparently if we give her those for 5 days and limit exercise to just gentle garden stuff, with no crazy charging around like a nutter (as she sometimes enjoys :) ), it will pass quickly. Fingers crossed.

I hope all is well and she shakes it off...

We've had 2 sets of antibiotics now with eyes and ears, and it definitely had an impact in the poo dept. First hard poo, not very often, but a lot when it did come. A change again when stopping the antibiotics, and had soft poo. Vet said was normal, not to worry, make sure he had enough water. Took about 2 days after the end of the drug for normal service to be resumed...

So yes, at least in my limited experience, antibiotics and changing poo is normal.

More poo! Angela must have just sat down to supper...

Same here when riley had antibiotics. We were also told that the antibiotics would strip his gut of good stuff and a simple yoghurt would help put them back. He enjoyed the yoghurt very much, hopefully it helped too :D

The vaccination protects against the major viral cause of kennel cough and the major bacterial cause (as I understand it anyway), but there are lots of other bugs out there that will cause kennel cough. Just as Kate said, it's exactly like having the flu shot which protects against the major flu going around. But it won't stop you getting the common cold.

Obi had kennel cough a few months ago so I sympathise. You should see improvement with the antibiotics (which Obi had to have too). The vet also gave us an anti-inflammatory to help soothe his throat - he was coughing so hard he'd throw up every meal. Then eat it again, naturally. There's a vomit story to add to the poo stories.

The painful bit is having to keep your dog away from other dogs till they are better. Our vet said keep him from direct contact for 10 days after he stopped coughing. That was a pain in the bottom, but it went fairly fast I guess.

Thanks, Angela :) Obi got it at obedience class and then gave it to half a dozen other dogs at day care before we realised he had it :-[ Oops! Trouble is, they are contagious when they have not yet developed obvious symptoms. He was totally fine within a week though and I'm sure that Penny will be fine soon too :)
