Our wait is over, Rocky is finallly here. He has been so good.. Slept in the car, came home and played. Does not know whats the use of potty patch( grass potty)!! Tries to sleep on it.. Had his first accident inside. Calmly slept in his crate.. So far so good.. I hope he wont wee in his crate, i have an alarm set to go in 4 hrs. He will call out if he needs to go earlier right? His crare is in my room so it will wake me up
Oh my god the whining !!! Nothing could have prepared me for this, he woke up for wee and did it outside. Now just would not stop crying un crate it is 1 am and hopefully he will settle down soon . I am reading happy puppy book to see if there is something I can do. I have not charged the clicker so rewarding ths quiet is not yet an option
Oh, sympathies! That first night, I seem to remember spending most of the night with my hand in the crate!! My little pup tried to play with me, but I just kept still and kept the room dark and she eventually did sleep and I pulled my (rather numb) hand back out. By the way, I graduałly backed off from that as she got happier with the the crate and in a few weeks she was downstairs sleeping through the the night. The first few weeks are exhausting, but it does get easier
Oh yes, the cries are very heart rending and LOUD! Fear not, it won't be long before he settles in and is replaced by a crazy crocodile!
How exciting and yes exhausting. It really is like having a new baby. I never took enough photos of those early weeks, so take loads you can always delete the ones you don't like. He will settle soon, he's missing his mummy and litter mates that's all. My girl had a cuddle Pal. She's almost 9 months old now, I had to throw it away last week because it was pretty much destroyed. It's been her favourite toy for so long. Yes, Fred too has a cuddle toy (Lion). We still say time for bed and he get his cuddle friend and he is 17 months old.
We put a pile of teddies in Twiglet's bed so they felt like litter mates. I think it helped in the first few days.
The noises they can make are so piteous and unbelievably loud... He will settle and become quieter over successive nights. Right now he feels all alone but he'll soon start to see you as part of his family and he'll feel much better. Having him in your room is the right thing to do - this will help him settle in faster I believe.
All our sympathies are with you for the whining. I was incredibly lucky with this compared to some, and Willow only whined for a few minutes here and there, but it is indeed heartbreaking. You're right that nothing prepares you for puppy motherhood (or fatherhood in some cases on here) - however many books and articles you read and however prepared you think you are, it is so much harder than you could possibly imagine. But, just know that with love, patience and consistency, each of these challenging phases will pass. For now, catch whatever catnaps you can, because these first few weeks are completely draining with the lack of sleep! Good luck and take loads of photos!
I hope you managed to get some sleep! I remember being amazed at how loud their crying could be. Hang in there, it gets better soon x
Congratulations- you will get through the nights. Have a plan but also be flexible. I slept when Chepi slept during the day, otherwise I couldn't be bright!
Sorry for not being able to post, I did not even touch my phone in 2 days.. Not able to get anything done he is fine with his crate and sleeps there at night but the moment I move from my bed , he starts whining . I tried to ignore it for sometime , he ends up pooping there he does not like his play pen ( only washable floor area) he thinks it is toilet area!! I take him out often and stay there for a while too bring him staight back to crate then try again in sometime. He does not relieve himself !! I even tried puppy pads in balcony along with fresh patch grass ..I let him in carpet a few times and few accidents.. I caught him in action and took him to balcony again he stops!! I am doing something wrong isn't it? This can not be normal !!puppy pics.. Believe it or not, I have takenonly one so far
He just hasn't got the idea yet, don't worry, it takes time and they all click in the end. When you know a pee is imminent carry him around for a while, that way he won't go in the wrong place. Then go to the right place and stay with him. No wee, carry again. Repeat then LOTS of treats and praise for doing it in the right place. It takes a while but you will soon be able to add a command to the behaviour and all then becomes MUCH easier because ou can ask for a wee then know he's empty for a while. It won't be long before these days are past and you can look back with a smile
Another idea for mornings - move straight form your bed to the pup before any whining - out for a poop and pee, you can then always put him back in the crate while you get dressed etc and ignore the cries
much better day today . I think we have a routine , though I went back a step, put puppy pads near the balcony door than outside and it helped so much. I know it is not ideal but now he knows he needs to go there atleast .. 7 am : wake up and pee poo ( does not do in balcony but does fine in puppy pad inside. may be he does not like balcony ?! I will post pics soon got sometime today as he sleeps so much !! I never knew puppys slept all the time , it feels like taking care of infant- eat, play , poop sleep
Glad things are going better Eat, sleep, play, poop (and not forgetting weeing of course!) - that pretty much sums it up. Soon you'll be able to add 'biting' But don't worry, that has a time limit on it and will pass.
