I've just read a few reports that say that some manufacturers of peanut butter, and other nut butters, are adding xylitol to them to replace some of the sugar. Xylitol is very toxic to dogs, even in very small amounts. It seems that, for now, the affected brands are those that are sold in health food shops and for performance diets, but it's definitely worth keeping an eye on the labels to ensure you're not affected. Personally, I always buy my peanut butter from a company called Meridian that contains nothing but crushed peanuts; no added salt, sugar, oil or anything else. You can buy it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Meridian-Na...583&sr=8-2&keywords=natural+peanut+butter+1kg Obviously, PB is very high in calories, so you shouldn't be feeding a lot, anyway.
Have you tried the Meridien cashew nut butter? It's lush!!! We had it as the recommendation was no peanuts until children are a year old in case they're allergic.....I must check my waitrose peanut butter too!!!
I've never even heard of Xylitol! Thanks for the information though, there's so much to remember, I might end up with a list of forbidden foods on the fridge!
We use Xylitol here as it's so much more healthy than real sugar. Will keep an eye out for any added to peanut butter though, thanks for the heads up That's probably the only relevant food that we give to Bob.
Oooh, I haven't tried the cashew nut butter. I do love cashews, though, so it might just fall into my Amazon cart for when we're over next
