Hello everyone , Rocky has always had soft stool( never kickable ) , I had asked my vet , she said it is normal during first few days. After 3/4 days, he started having watery poo at night multiple times , called the vet she said to mix pumpkin with kibble. Did that, and that and stool was back to soft ( think chocolate dip consistency) . However, last few days , he is waking up 3/4 times for poo and the consistency is same . Is this normal? He plays , eats and drinks well, does not seem ro bother him .But, I am sleep deprived taking him out almost every hour at night:( please help..

If his poo is runny at night then it doesn't sound right. Are you feeding him the right amount? What is your feeding schedule?

I use kibble brand - Life's adundance large puppy breed kibble , recommended by breeder. For his weight( 14.4 pound) package says -2 and half cups . I feed him at 7, 11, 2, 6 ( 4 meals of half cup) . Another half in treats.

I don't know the brand but I would suggest weighing out the allowance for the day to make sure you are giving the right amount. Otherwise another call to the vet might be needed.
I expect you are very tired! It does seem odd that your pup poos so much at night. I hope someone else will offer other suggestions.

Are you using his kibble as treats or another type of treat? Is the kibble what the breeder was using? But I agree that the nighttime poos does not sound normal. Perhaps a vet call.

Thank you all . Here is the link to food:

I give him kibble as treats, today is Sunday so I will not be able to call vet ( she said to call back on monday) . I am using the same food as breeder. He specifically asked us to use this brand since it is all natural and locally made.

When I first got Myles he was on Pro Plan, which he did great with. But I tried switching him (slowly) to a recommended brand (Flint River Ranch) which was also all natural. But his poos were very soft when he was on it and from what I read that was to be expected on that type of food (poo consistency described as "soft serve ice cream"). Ultimately I decided to put him back on Pro Plan and have been mostly enjoying kickable poos ever since. When those poos get bigger and have to be bagged ... well soft serve ice cream is hard to bag

Soft service icecream consistency is spot on at describing his poo.. I will call the breeder and see if he was seeing the same. But, frequency of night poo still remains a mistery . Good to know about all natural and poo consistency ( will not be eating soft serve icecream for a while though;)

It sounds to me as if something is wrong. Poo shouldn't be soft for any length of time, whatever they're fed. If you talk to people who feed raw diets, one of the things they talk about is how little poo there is and how firm it is - you don't get more "natural" than a fully raw diet.

You need to be aware that the word "natural" isn't necessarily synonymous with "healthy" or "balanced".

I'd say there's either something he's eating - or the quantity of it - isn't agreeing with him, or he has a tummy bug that needs sorting out.

If your vet isn't worried (which would be strange after a few days of him being squiffy), then I would try him on sloppy rice and chicken for a day and see if that firms him up - if it does, slowly reintroduce the kibble alongside and see if that keeps him firm.

Fiona, I am puzzled by that too. We are vegetarian and do not cook meat at home. I have no clue how to make chicken for dog :( I think I will have a talk with my vet , I hope it is not stress induced? I read that puppies can have stomach issues if they are stressed? Foodwise, nothing has changed from what he was on at breeder( i even got the same measuring cup from breeder!! ) . Another thing is water changes? He was on well water there , now on filtered water. But , one week should have been enough to adjust. I am so lost:(

It could be the change of water, but probably not! Maybe he has a giardia, needs checking with vet when she opens again. Pups can and do have soft poo, due to stress of moving, different water, different food, but not be going so frequently. I am sure it will be sorted once you can speak to vet.

If you want to try chicken and rice, just buy a ready-cubed chicken breast, so you don't have to touch it, or else a pack of chicken mince, and put it in a pan with water and rice. Cook until the rice is very tender, even almost mushy. Then, without draining, allow to cool and feed small portions to the pup, making sure it's nice and sloppy.

If you can't face the chicken, you could just try plain rice, but it's obviously not as nutritious for your little Rockstar.

It may well just be the stress and upheaval of leaving his litter, and also, like babies, they can be prone to more upset tummies at a young age, but young puppies can go downhill very quickly when they have diarrhoea, so it's always best to err on the side of caution. Maybe take a stool sample to the vet's as soon as possible for analysis?

Good luck and I hope that you get it sorted very soon. They are a worry!

I am vegetarian too but have cooked chicken for Chepi. I just buy some chicken thighs or wings (defrost if frozen), chuck in an oven proof dish with a couple of splashes of water, put a lid on or tin foil, cook on about 180/190 C. Probably 350F for 40 mins. Take it off the bone and DISCARD cooked bones. Don't cook in oil and don't give the skin to your pup while there's a dodgy tummy as it's fatty. Only mix small amounts to start with - maybe a couple of ounces with a couple of tablespoons spoons or less of rice. Then try some more 2 hours later.
I know I can get out of hours emergency advice on the phone (free) so if you are worried that might be worth trying.

Update on Rocky: I took him to vet on Monday instead of calling her . They ran few tests on stool and said everything is fine . She said consistency of the stool is not bothering her since some puppies do have loose stool. However, she was worried about frequency of it at night. She asked me to keep a close eye on him for few days. Yesterday night was better , he woke up only once . he has started spending few hours at a care takers house ( when I work) . She is giving him chicken and rice ) it is helping him so much !! He spends his time with her and her 3 small dogs , loves it:) we went to Ballon Festival with him yesterday evening and he was center of attention of everyone:)

Mine was like this until I found he was intolerant of chicken. Might be one the ingredients of his kibble don't agree with him, mine was on a food that the breeder started him on. Could be a lot of things, I'd speak to you vet.

    What size are his meals?

Some pups take ages to manage larger meals and have sloppy poos if their meals are too big.

When I moved Twiglet from 4 meals to 3 meals her poos became very soft, almost watery. So she is back to 4 meals and I am reducing the third meal of the day by 3 grams a time and increasing the other three by one gram each day. I have a chart and this process will take 3 weeks (!) We are on day ten now and her poos remain nice and kickable. I hope to get to 3 meals with no more sloppy poos :)

    (She's 15 weeks old)

I feed her at 7:30am 1pm 4pm and 7:30pm the meal I'm fading out is the 4pm one.
